Hey guys,
am a Junior & am thinking of taking Biochem during the summer. It's gonna be 7 weeks three days a week only . I don't work & totally free in the summer, but my pre health adviser didn't encourage me to take the class in the summer since the material is tough and the semester is only 7 weeks (she was like, OMG you are gonna fail it, yeah she's negative & yeah am not gonna meet with her anymore lol ) I actually failed ORGO 1 then retook it & that might have been one of the reasons why she told me not to take the class in the summer. On the other hand, the other advisers & the Prof. who teaches the class told me that ORGO 2 is not required for the class & I can definitely take it in the summer. Everyone says something different & that's why am here today! I really wanna know your opinions and would really appreciate your advice; Just don't tell me am gonna fail the class 😀 Am currently debating between taking Biochem & Psych during the summer. Oh & the course grade is based on 4 exams (the lowest will be dropped), project that's worth 25 pts & 3 quizzes , each one is worth 10 pts).

Summer classes are generally more difficult than semester classes, mainly because of the shortened time period. But if you don't have work or other activities distracting you, and if you have good time management skills, you should be able to suck it up and do well. If you are a "crammer" or wait until a few days before to study for the exam, biochem will probably be hell for you. But if you go to all the classes and review what you learned every day, do practice questions, and otherwise work very hard, you should be fine.

In my experience, pre-health advisors often underestimate the capabilities of students, but you also have to be realistic of your own abilities.

I wouldn't advise you to take it. You failed Orgo 1. You need to figure out what you're doing wrong before you move up the ladder.

Op retook orgo

Yes but then retook it and presumably raised the grade.

Summer school is very accelerated, OP needs to do well in the first shot or OP's GPA will be even lower than it is with the F. I'd hate to see OP in a situation like that

I'm just saying that he/she might have already figured out what he was doing wrong when he retook the class. Failing one class, especially one as notoriously difficult and weed-out as orgo doesn't predict future failing, but like I said, OP needs to be realistic about his/her own abilities. If he buckles down and studies hard, biochem over the summer without work or any outside distraction is very doable.

I'm currently taking a summer biochem course, lasting six weeks. I recommend that the rest of your life is put on hold, because there is a LOT of material, and it goes really fast.

Am a girl 🙂, Also, I agree that at some point of your life, you might face some difficulties like family issues that would affect your academic performance. Adcoms should realize that pre med students are not machines & one semester should not determine their future! Still waiting for other peoples' opinions, & thanks for those who already replied. 🙂

I'm also taking biochem now and maybe its because we've only just started, but I'm not finding it as difficult as some are saying and I've been able to keep up in addition to shadowing(but that's only two days a week). The stuff we're doing right now isn't hard, but it will probably get more difficult. A lot of this stuff so far I've already seen in other science classes and I feel like most other Juniors have too. Everyone's different and advisers, in my experience, always underestimate a student's abilities and that student is usually very impressionable and will end up underestimating his/her own abilities.

It will get harder, but it also depends on the prof. I adored my biochem prof in undergrad and she made learning the info relatively easy, whereas people who had the other biochem prof said he was absolutely horrible.

oh, so did u find taking ORGO 2 before biochem helpful? I've taken genetics, P chem & Microbiology but I don't know if those would make the material easier to understand.... 🙁

First off, don't take advice from advisors seriously. I went to my premed advisor a few weeks ago and she told me that I would not make it into medical school and I should find another career (I have a 3.8/30 btw). To answer your question, I think taking biochem over the summer shouldn't be a problem. It really depends on what biochem it is though. At our school we have the easy version and the hard version. The hard version is absolutely horrendous, and the easy version is extremely straight forward. Also taking ORGO 2 before biochem is completely unnecessary. You only need a very basic organic chemistry background going into biochem (understanding polarity, etc...).

Same here; She looked at my transcript & I felt like I lost all my chances. I really decided not to meet with a pre health adviser anymore.
