Hi all,

I recently graduated with a B.S. in cell and molecular biology and ended with a 3.38 cGPA and 3.2 sGPA. (upward trend till senior year). I am Hispanic and able to speak Spanish fluently. I am a first generation student having 6 other siblings (5th child) and parents are fruit harvesters for a living. I did 2 years at a CC then transferred to university and did 3 years, commuted to both schools the entire time, both an hour away from my parent's home. I couldn't afford to live on campus and I helped my parents pay bills since I was 14 (first legal/official job) and have always had a job since I was 14 (give or take a few months).

I'm taking a gap year and going back to school this upcoming fall to take upper level electives for a DIY post-bacc to prove to myself I can handle med school along with increasing my GPA. I plan on applying to med school next year, 2023 along with taking the MCAT. Below are my current experiences:

Patient Transporter (paid) - pretty sure over 2000 over a 2 year period
Cardiology Medical Scribe (paid) - pretty sure over 800 over a 1.5 year period
Shadowed in different specialties (volunteer) - EM MD (50 hours), Gastro DO (4 hours), Interventional Cardio DO (44 hours), Clinical Neurology MD (37 hours), Malignant Hematology MD (9.5 hours)
Research Assistant (volunteer) - 50 hours over 4 months (no pubs, abstracts, posters, etc.)
Homeless Shelter (volunteer ) - 50 hours over 5 months
Fruit Harvester - lifelong experience (paid and volunteer lol)

I'm graduated now so I'm looking for a full time job along with making some money - being broke is not fun. I had a job offer today for MA/Scribe for primary care - full-time with 3 12 hour shifts. I have another interview next week for a clinical research assistant for 5 days a week, 8-5 full-time job. If offered the RA job as well, which should I take? I'd like to point out research was not really my thing but after volunteering in a lab I can see how it would be beneficial for becoming a physician, this ultimately led me to apply for a clinical RA position since no academic RA jobs ever reached back out to me.

I would just like advice on how I can be a more competitive applicant, anything helps! Thank you!

Fellow low-SES/URM here, the MCAT will be really important given your GPAs. I was in a similar position, my GPAs were low and I had to work while studying. Choose the job that will maximize your study time.

I also did a DIY post-bacc. If either job will reduce your tuition for classes, that's also an important consideration!

Feel free to DM 😊

Mexican-American. Out of curiosity, does the type of Hispanic matter? - that's a genuine question lol
Many Hispanics are not under-represented.
Mexican Americans are seriously under-represented, sadly.
I've seen folks with applications like yours get into the finest schools in the land (like mine!) with a 505 MCAT.

Where was your family working and living even you were a child? Any mentoring or academic enrichment programs promoting STEM or health careers?
My mom and dad were both fruit harvesters until a couple years ago. My dad got a job as a machine operator and my mom got a job at meat factory. Nowadays, given summer is harvest season for watermelon, they both quit their jobs to go back to harvesting. I'd like to note they are both Spanish-speaking with moderately/minimally understanding English if that matters at all.

Kind of for your 2nd question. There was a time in 6th and 7th grade where I was part of the all boys STEAM class meant for the "smart" boys. However, the boys program was dismantled after 7th grade. I believe the administration realized putting immature boys together in a class was a bad idea. We pulled a lot of shenanigans which included at one point a possible arrest cause we stole a teachers key...I was a mere accomplice but no arrests were made that day. In high school, we had a medical program but I was never a part of it. Other than that, no actual programs towards STEM that were ever presented to me before going to college.

On a serious note, I thought so about Mexican-Americans, I've only ever met one in person as a pre-med.
