  1. Pre-Medical

Hello, I am a current undergrad psychology major at Washington University in St. Louis. I'm graduating this year and decided late that I wanted to be pre-med. I was accepted to Washu's program but waitlisted at Bryn Mawrs. Basically, Bryn Mawr told me there's close to zero chance I'll get in and the reason I was not admitted was because I needed more clinically related experience to improve my motivation to become a doctor. They advised me if I wanted to reapply, I would have to work full time in clinical medicine as like a medical scribe or something like that. Washu's program is great but it is two years long without linkages, which is not exactly what I'm looking for and is a pretty new program. They also advised me to become a medical scribe and work part time while taking classes. It's no guarantee I'd get into Bryn Mawr if I reapplied but I'd be able to apply to a lot more programs and have more options (I only applied to Bryn Mawr and Washu). However, I also realize that Washu's program is good, but I just don't know that much about it.

I was wondering if anyone had any advice on this? Even though I'm an undergrad at Washu I don't know that much about the program and am trying to get in touch with some current post baccs. I'm leaning towards Washu's program and working part time as a medical scribe but I just wanted to hear from people about the program. Has anyone attended the program? How were the advising and classes?

Why are you so worried about attending a formal post-bachelor program? I am assuming that is what these are? How is your total GPA from your undergraduate work? How is your GPA considering just biology, chemistry, physics, and math courses?

First off, quit obsessing about Bryn Mawr's program. You have several avenues to take.
  • You can do a DIY post-bac. Coursework can be at a CC...you're a non-trad now, so CC coursework is viewed in a differently light that for UGs trying to evade the weeding cvourses at their home school.
  • You can do a formal post-bac program.
  • You can do a SMP.

The two programs are a dime-a-dozen. Do your homework and find some. You're obviously willing to relocate and that's good. The best SMPs will be one that are given by med schools and provide a back door in. A few examples; PCOM, TUCOM-NV, Rosy Franklin, Drexel (in two places yet), Mt Sinai, TUCOM-CA, and my own, somewhere west of St Louis (no, not WashU!).

During the time you're in school, you will need to do all the requitsite volunteering, shadowing etc.
