Hello, I am new here. Im looking for advice on what I should do now that my first application cycle is over. For context, I applied to twenty-something MD schools (mid tier and top tier just for funsies). I received secondaries from all the schools I applied, but 0 II. My stats are: 3.4 cgpa, 3.0 sgpa, 498 mcat, 2000+ hours clinical experience, 200 hours shadowing, 200+ hours volunteering, and 1 semester of research (no publications).

I would like to know if I should plan to focus and retake the mcat and apply again next cycle, or do a SMP/masters, eventually retake the mcat and then reapply in two years.

Any advice is appreciated 🙂)

Where is your state of residence? What is the breakdown by hours of your 200 hours of non clinical volunteering?

Im from ohio. I volunteered for a hospital’s front desk helping guide visitors to where they needed to go (~50 hours). Then I volunteered in a kitchen packing meals on wheels (~50 hours). I also volunteered at an animal shelter for ~100 hours.

A 498 MCAT and a 3.0 sGPA are not competitive for any MD schools which is why you received no interviews. You could receive interviews at some of the newer DO schools. If you could score over 500 on the MCAT you would be more competitive for DO schools.

I strongly recommend you either do a special Masters program or a do-it-yourself post back, and retake the mcat.

As a note to SDNers, one should not apply to medical schools for "funsies". That's a donation, and they don't need the money. Instead y'all should take your mom out for Mother's Day instead.

Your extracurriculars are sound. Suggest getting in some more service to others less fortunate than yourself, because many of the schools that reward reinvention are service loving schools.
