dear god I hope u're being sarcastic about the pan optic.

$300 more than he needs to spend on an opthalmoscope that he's going to most likely only use for a year. And while it's a really great one, it is not the style u'll be using on the boards.

to the OP: u can't skimp out, but u can save a lot using e-bay. Best advice from my perspective is to get the Welch Allyn 2.5V oto/ophthalmo pocket set. I got it for $177 "buy-it-now" option off of a redistributor using e-bay. If u want something more standard that, go for the 3.5V.

Same here. Borrow, or rent from classmates or other medical students. Most of them are okay with it.

Hi there,
Borrow or buy off upperclassmen that realize they do not need this stuff after second year physical diagnosis.

njbmd 🙂

Don't get the pocket Welch Allyn... you can't see a damned thing with that ophthalmoscope. Seriously, if you're going to get one, just go with the standard size one. I bought my Welch Allyn set from an upperclassman for $200 - not cheap, but nearly half the regular cost. Ebay is another good option. And yeah, you're probably never going to use it after your physical diagnosis stuff this year, so next year you can just sell it to an underclassman for the same amount as what you paid for it.

really? I see through it just fine. Granted, i've only tried the 2.5V one and the pan optic. not the 3.5V. If u can get it for ur price though, then why even bother risking having trouble w/ a 2.5V, right?

Hi,
I was going to make the same mistake and buy the diagnostic set! Thank god I didn’t...
I wouldn't advice you to buy this one neither a better one especially since you haven’t got enough money at the moment.
To be honest I’ve been using the ophthalmoscope in the wards during the rounds
And I never actually needed to have one of my own. I don't know if you'd need it for bedside exams/OSCES??

thanks for the advice guys, it means alot.... so I don't need to buy an otoscope or an opthalmoscope? they provide them at the hospital? because I went to the VA hospital to see patients (intro to clin med second year) and they didn't have optha/otoscope beside the beds there...... were does one pick one up? at the nurses station?

Anyhow...... so once u do your clinical rotations they are provided for you?

thanks alot!!

Agree with above -- DON'T BUY THEM. Save the $700 or whatever it costs.

The ONLY times I "needed" the equipment was during objective structured clinical exams (OSCE) during M1 and M2 years. And I can count those times on ONE HAND. There were a couple of times when the med school asked me to "bring my kit" to take the clinical exam, etc. May I suggest that if the med school doesn't provide, band together with a group of ten or fifteen (or twenty) students, contribute maybe $15 or $20 apiece, get the equipment, SHARE IT and then donate it to your med school / the class below.

I have NEVER used any of my own equipment other than a STETHOSCOPE (Littmann Classic is more than sufficient) in M3 or M4. If you need a BP cuff, it will be IN THE HOSPITAL ROOM. If you need an otoscope or ophthalmoscope, they will either be available in the ER or on the pediatrics floor in the hospital. If you are doing outpatient, it will be in every examining room.

Save money!

sweet thanks@!!!!! 🙂
