I had an interview in March. But - I didn't get in and the school said it was an unusual situation.

I would save the traveling until after I got my acceptance letter. Say you are out of the country when you get an interview and have to schedule it for after you return, you are now interviewing very late and decreasing your chances of getting in. As much as I encourage people to get out and see the world, I personally would wait.

I agree with Lifeisgood.
Most schools will not accept without an interview so in essence, your application is not complete until you either get rejected or get an interview. With that said, with the crazy competition out there these days would you really want to risk it. Schools will be more than happy to let to reschedule your interview, but in the meantime, someone else will take your interview slot. And as long as your application is not complete, (because you haven't interviewed) that's one more seat that the school have to fill. So you could go from being the one chosen for the seat to being the one on the waitlist for that seat.

If the trip is very important to you and you know you'd go on it anyway, I'd say call up the darn schools right now and tell them your situation. They might give you an earlier interview. Otherwise, reschedule the trip until you get an acceptance letter.

btw, I'm sorry you have to make such a hard choice.

That is what I am doing also.

Do I like it? Absolutely not.

Am I happy about it? Not the least.

Do I want to go travel? You have no idea how much I enjoy traveling.

But staying in the country is what is best for the situation, unfortunately. Lifeisgood has some good advice.

There was another poster who is studying abroad in Japan. (S)He was spending a fortune to come back to America to interview...
