I stumbled onto this site a few weeks ago, after receiving my last rejection letter. In all honesty, I am completely confused as to what I should do next year. I am a graduating senior and I was hoping to get into dental school this round. Should I do a masters and be miserable because I won't enjoy it or should I try to get a dental assistant job after I retake the DAT. Any advice would be appreciated. Thank you.

Statistcs:

GPA: 3.75
sGPA: 3.8

PAT: 20

Did u at least have any interviews; those are average to above average stats; they aren't rejection worthy.
where did u apply?

I had one interview at Baylor, my state school. I also applied to Temple, NYU, Colorado, Arizona and both UT schools. My personal statement was very good from what people said. I talked with some guy on the adcom at Baylor and he said I needed a higher DAT.

I dont think you need a masters.... your GPA is pretty high. I dont think that is the problem.
The only thing I see bad about your DAT is the RC... I think if you improve that score, you should be fine.

How many schools did you apply to?
How early did you apply?
Did you get any interviews? and if so, how did they go?
What other extra stuff makes you stand out?

Assisting is a great way to get some experience and show dedication. I didnt get in last year. I didnt want to do a masters either, so I went the 'beef up the experience' route and got an assisting job. I think that had a major impact on my acceptance this year.

being that u have an awesome GPA, retaking the DAT would suffice;
don't fret, just one more point in AA should do

I had aadsas done the first week it was out. I took the DAT June 19. Is that not early enough??

How do I go about getting a job as an assistant? Do I need to take classes or can I just ask a dentist?

Speak to your dentist; they are usually open to the idea. if not just ask around, or go to a nearby clinic- you'll see a lot of cool stuff

Apply to 15 schools next time. There were several schools this cycle with stats that were less than my own, yet they never even contacted me (BU comes to mind). Can't explain it but some of it must just be the right person happening to read the application. You might as well use this summer to retake the DAT and bring all those scores up a point or so. But definately apply to more schools.

wow you sound exactly like me! i am also very confused about what I should before I reapply. check out this website www.dats.net - they have 9 weeks dental assisting program. I am thinking of doing that. It is only available in few states though, but you might find something similar to that in your state. hope this helps!

Don't go to a masters! You will have to finish it out before you can matriculate into dental school. Just study your %$# off and retake the DAT in late May. Get a job related to the dental field if possible; dental assisting would be great.
