Hi guys. I recently changed my mind about going to med school and decided to do dentistry. This is my situation and I will try to make long story short: I attended a Carib medical school for 2 minths this year and withdrew from their program( for different reasons). I am currently studying to take DAT (hopefully this summer). I have a 3.437 overall gpa and a science gpa thats around 3.3. I have plenty of shadowing and volunteering experience both in the medical and dental fields.
1. My main question is- will taking the mcat/ attending a Carib med school hurt my chances of getting into a dental school?
2. Should I even mention I attended aforeign med school?
3. I really want to get into NYU. I was thinking of applying this year as soon as I take my DAT in August. How realistic will it be given that my DAT will be 19+ on all sections?

Thanks for your responses!

You'll need to be pretty convincing that you won't do the same thing to a dental school, should they accept you (even if you think your reason was good, withdrawing is a big deal). You'll also need to be pretty convincing on your change of heart from medicine. I'm sure it happens and they've seen it before, but expect to back yourself up.

19+ on all sections and your GPAs all submitted in August...I'd guess you'd have a shot at NYU. I'd apply beyond NYU, of course.

Some dental schools are probably out of the question considering they have thousands of more qualified people that have always desired to be dentists. But, a KILLER DAT score would probably send some interviews your way.

Also, you will need to mention the medical school thing. It is a very specific question on the application. You need to let them know that you took the MCAT and you need to tell them if you have "ever attended another professional school"

Anything is possible. Best of luck.

Thank you. When you say 'some' which ones are you referring to? My first choice is NYU

NYU is achievable. I would apply broadly though.... LOTS of expensive private schools should be on your list (excluding Columbia and Harvard).

Shoul I wait a year and apply earlier? (June)
If you take the DAT in the next two months you should be fine to apply this yr. If you feel like you're not ready and need more time then yes, apply next year. As to what schools...when you apply to dental school it is just like the amcas application where they ask you if you previously applied or attended to another health profession school and that app gets sent to every school you apply to. I don't know specifically which school would find it as a good or bad thing that you attended med school previously.

On a side note: An acquaintance of mine was in a similar situation but she had attended law school, dropped out and went on to pursue medical school. During her med school interview she was also questioned about the switch but she was able to show that she was resolute in her decision and it came across positive because she was accepted to multiple schools. Use the fact that you entered med school as a positive thing and that it showed you that you just want to concentrate on the dental branch of medicine.

Good luck!

1) shouldn't hinder ur chances.... alot of young adults change their mind all the time, I don't see how this can be negative.... HOWEVER, it would hinder ur chances if u were KICKED out of the medical school (thats a different story)

2) I wouldn't lie, if any school ever caugh you, the consequences could be severe (I don't know what schools do in that case, do they black list you from their program only? or contact all other schools.... again I don't know, I just wouldn't ever lie in this process)

3) No one in their right minds can tell you.... However, 3.4 GPA with 3.3 science and 19DAT is considered slightly below average
