Hi everyone! Please help me, I'm so confused right now. I want to apply to pharmacy schools this fall 2005 but I don't know whether I can get in or not. My GPA is kinda low but I really want to pursue the field. I applied to Medical Technology and got accepted for this Fall 2004. Should I just go to Medical Technology and forget about pharmacy? I don't know if I can get a job in Medical Technology. Anyone knows anything about the outlook for MT. Any advices would be greatly appreciated 😉

Thanks,
orchidd

Why not plan on attending medical technology AND applying to pharmacy school?

I have always taught my children - who are most likely your age - have a plan B

My mom was a med tech for many years and she regrets having gone into the field. Unless you really love the field I wouldn't recommend it. Jobs aren't abundant and the pay is not that great (I'm not saying that pay is everything, but considering the schooling that goes into it, it should probably be higher). My sister-in-law's mother is also a med tech, it was tough over the last couple of years for her to find a job, but she's working right now and enjoys it. But she only does it to have something to do aside from sitting at home.
I'm with baggywrinkle, maybe go to MT and apply for pharmacy for next year.

baggywrinkle,

thanks for your input 🙂

emogrrrrl,

Actually I already got a B.S in biology but I couldn't find a job at all. I heard that MT is easy to find jobs so I applied for it. If MT is like you said, I don't think I would want to go into it now. Hopefully I can get into pharmacy school next year (a slight chance for me though but I will try my best)

Thanks,
orchidd

i agree with baggywrinkle that having alternatives is a good thing. btw baggywrinkle my mom tells me the same 😉 . besides you never know how good of a chance you have until you try...i say this from personal experience. don't underestimate yourself!!! 🙂 also look into volunteering at your local pharmacy to get some experience it can help with your application and to help you determine if you want to go into pharmacy or not. goodluck to you!!!

I was a med tech/CLS major through undergrad. I always heard the statistics regarding how much all MTs love their jobs and how it's perfect, yada yada. I didn't like the idea of dealing with blood, urine, and feces all day long for 40k/year though. Pharmacy school feels much better. 🙂

my all family works in labratory field. my father my microbiologist, my uncle is biochemist, and my mother is a med-tech. they all told me not work in the field. its very demanding job and the pay is not that much.

biophiliac1, bananaface, jdpharmd, maxell🙂

thank you for all your opinions! I graduated with Biology degree and couldn't find a job. I'm currently working as a pharmacy assistant (not pharmacy technician though) at Walgreens. I really like it. I applied to MT because I'm afraid that I won't be able to get into Pharmacy. My overall GPA is 3.03 🙁 does any pharmacy school accept the GPAs in that range?

Thanks,
orchidd

I'm not sure on the 3.03. But, it wouldn't take too much effort to boost your GPA a teeny bit with summer community college classes. You would get to 3.105 if you have 180 graded credits completed and got a 4.0 for 15 credits over the summer. If your prerequisite scores are higher then the overall gpa, you could apply to schools that look all/mostly at your prereq grades. There seems to be a big range in average GPAs at different schools. You could always apply this year and plan on taking courses that will make you more competitive over the next year in the event that you don't get in. It all depends on what you want to do with your like. Would you be happy with Med Tech, or would you be settling? I'm not a settler. I'm not into the whole reincarnation idea.

15 credits seems like an extremely heavy summer load. That's anywhere from 4-5 classes, depending on how many credits they are each. I'm taking 11 credit hours right now, and I work full-time. It's no walk in the park, but I'm making A's thus far. It's not impossible to take that many credits during a summer, but I wouldn't do it unless I absolutely had to.

Fifteen credits would be a full load on the quarter hour system. (Three 5 credit classes) Ten would be a full load for semester credits. Either option works to boost the gpa in the same proportion. I'm stuck on the quarter system.
