I've had a rough start in college; personal obstacles and honestly my priorities now are different from when I started college. A year and half ago I was suppose to graduate with a 2.3 GPA, and an 290 OAT score. 🙁 But realistically I know no one would have accepted me. So I decided to postpone my graduation and get a second bachelor's (the 1st one is biology, 2nd one is psy). I work part time to pay off my 2nd bachelor's because my parents can't afford it and financial aid can't help. I've been very involved in school with the pre-opt club, and I currently hold a position in the club, Ive shadowed and volunteered all throughout college. I've gone from a 2.3 to 2.53, and when I finish this summer semester, my gpa will go to a 2.6. Fall semester I am taking Microecology, Immunology, histology, and Biochem II. The point of taking these sciences classes is to show optometry schools that I am capable of achieving well if they only give me a chance. If i continue my 4.0 trend, since I started my 2nd bachelor's and I realized I needed to put myself first and my priorities straight, I should have a 2.7 by fall semester, and then spring semester, I plan on retaking the OAT and hopefully earning a 340. I believe if I study 1 whole semester every day I can really improve my OAT score. I've considered a master's, but my 2 optometrists believe its not worth it, they think that i should just continue what i am doing and apply when I am done with the OAT in the spring. Apply early next yr in July! Is anyone on the same boat? and If so any helpful comments or advise would be great! Thank you for reading this and for the positive feedback! Has anyone been through this?

I am going through the same situation right now. I have only been at my school for 2 years though. I went to a CC and came out with a 3.6 GPA but once I transferred to a 4 year my grades took a hit because I was also an athlete and it took a hit on my time to study. Right now I'm going to retake some classes and take the classes which I have left and work on raising my GPA before I actually apply for optometry school.

A 340 OAT score would be awesome and will only help you. Honestly a 2.6 GPA is quite low and it won't improve your chances of getting in.

I plan on applying next year. I am will be taking a few classes in the fall semester and by then my GPA will be at 2.7 and then I will take the OAT in spring 2011. I plan to apply with a 2.7 and 340 OAT overall score. Has anyone applied with a 2.7 and 340 OAT criteria? I also have a lot of extracurricular activities.
