I had this exact same question last year, and took my step 2 in sep and applied with my results. Many programs did not call me for lack of interview spots,so my advice go ahead and apply,it will not hurt.

I agree. Apply early. Since you have not taken Step 2 CS yet, and considering that most program start looking at applications in early September, the best thing you can do at this time is to apply early.

That being said, try to take Step 2 CS as soon as possible, preferably soon enough for you to have the results before your interviews.

Good Luck.

i am interested in Internal medicine, i don't know if i should take a chance to apply now with this score in step1 or just wait untill the post match? or apply in late december, i know i will do good in step2 ck and cs cause i have very strong clinical experince and i am doing good in the Qbanks etc etc. would i be just wasting money for applying for all the programs cause of my low probability or is it worth it? if i apply post match what are my chances of matching? i think IM is not very compatative, i am willing to work anywhere it doesn't have to be a compatitive progarm. last year there had been so many unfilled slots in IM. What do you guys think? pls comment 🙁
Thanking you in advance for your help guys, you guys are great 👍

Joeeey, If I was in your shoes, I would definately apply early. Yes, you might be more attractive if you apply with Step 2 results in hand, but applying early is very important too. Besides, what do you have to loose? You cannot scamble without being in the match anyway.

My friend was in your shoes last year. He applied early, took the Step 2 in the middle of November, got the result in late december, then sent the programs he applied to an update with his Step 2 results. He MATCHED into IM at UMDNJ this year.

The scramble is not an easy proccess It is very stressful and time consuming. Also, you never know how the match will turn out this year. I would not take the risk and place all my hopes on the scramble, without "playing the game" first. Part of playing the game correctly is to apply early. Besides, you are applying for IM, and your chances of matching somewhere with a "80" on Step 1 is fair to good.

Good Luck.

ok i will take your advise, one more thing how many programs to do you think i should apply for ? should they all be in one region or should i apply all over the US? and the other thing i wanted to ask was should i apply for family medicine ? i don't like family medicine at all 🙁 should i still apply as a backup?

Thank you so much leoko 🙂

I would apply to as many programs as I can. I would say 25-30 would be a safe number, but if you can apply to more programs then go ahead.

The more programs you apply to = the more programs you can RANK on the rank list = the higher is your chance of matching on match day.

Apply to programs at locations were you see yourself living for 3 years. If you do not have any living restrictions or preferences, then apply widely. The East Coast tends to be more "FMG friendly" (if you do not mind living in NYC or NJ).

I personally do not think you will need a "backup" for IM, specially since you are not interested in FP. Many of my friends however did apply to both IM and FP, but ended matching in IM anyway. They all said that appying to FP programs, when you really want IM, is a waste of time and money.

Good Luck.

thank you for such a wonderful advise, i will go ahead and apply soon and try my LUCK, what are you doing? are you doing residency or in the same boat as me?
wish you best of luck 👍

I am still in water, my friend, still in the water. Thanks for wishing me good luck. I sure do need it.

I hope you will get a great match next year. 👍
