Hey guys,

Well I'm honestly not sure about what major to take in undergrad before going into DPT. I don't care and all I want to do is major in a science. I love science overall, so I don't have preferences.

A school I really want to go to does not have anything related to athletic training/exercise science/etc-. It only provides general biology, orthotics, and physiology. (<-majors that I WOULD consider)

I know other schools that have those degrees but rather would not go to.

What do you guys think? Would I do just as well in a major that's not directly applicable to physical therapy like athletic training/exercise science is, or should I just care about doing the pre-reqs?

THANKS!

If you are in a science major such as biology or physiology you will be fine as long as you take all the prereqs. If you go to a good school the advisers should work with you to make sure you can work them into your schedule, if they aren't already. In fact, a major in biology and physiology may be better because it shows you are really competing with other science majors - courses in the bio department are often considered as harder/better and some schools actually require your sciences courses to be from the Bio department.

Whatever you choose, make sure it is something you are intrested in. I majored in Kinesiology, and loved it. It was very well rounded and kept me interested throughout the four years. I loved my undergraduate school and wouldn't trade my experiences for anything; however, I would advise you that if you are deciding between a couple of schools and one of them has their own DPT program, or has acceptance connections/contracts with another school's DPT program, to really consider that school

Well, seeing as my undergrad major was elementary & early childhood education and I'm applying to PT school, I'd say you can choose what you like... Honestly, if I could do it all over, I would try to take something semi-related to the PT field, only because it will make you more knowledgable!

It doesn't matter. Do what you want. PT schools take students across every major. As long as you have the prerequisites you're qualified.
