  1. Pre-Health (Field Undecided)
can anyone help me with this? I have had two schools tell me that i would not need to include my parents info on my application, but another that said that my parents info would be needed. i am 26 and married...have not gotten any $ from my parents for over 7 years...i have not been on their taxes for at least 5 years...does anyone have an answer that has been through this...what does fafsa require?
any info would be great!
Thank you!

There are six qualifiers that allow you to file as "independent" of your parents support. They are:

1. Age 24 by January 1 of the aid year
2. Veteran of the U.S. Armed Forces
3. Graduate or graduate/professional student
4. Married prior to filing and signing the FAFSA
5. Orphan or ward of the court
6. Have legal dependents other than a spouse

Checking off one or more of these exempts you from having to file with your parent's tax returns.

In most cases you don't need it, however, there are some need-based programs (usually implemented by individual schools) that require parental information, regardless of your age or status. They want to be sure that that money is going to someone who has no parental resources to fall back on.

Beware that some medical schools will have their "inside" financial aid application that will require parental information for "need-based" scholarships even though FAFSA does not. Check with your school as soon as you can to make sure that you get all of the info in place to get the maximum amount of money that you qualify for.

Some of the schools to which I applied waived the parental info requirement for need-based scholarships once the applicant was over a certain age, but that age was 30 or above everywhere I looked. Obviously, I didn't look everywhere, though.
