I'm a first year IM resident and confused as to what direction to take.
I originally was planning to do neurosurgery because I love the complexity of it and the idea of working with my hands essentially being able to "fix" someone's problem ideally rather than managing it. However, I decided not to apply to surgical programs because of the crazy hours and the difficulty in spending time with your family. But now in an IM program, I am not happy especially listening to patients go on and on about minor problems. I am not happy managing patients; I want to "fix" what's wrong with them and send them on their way.
I was thinking of specializing in cards, perhaps EP or interventional. Can someone tell me who has experience in either of these what it's like? Are there any other fields within IM that are more procedural and give you that sense that you actually fixed something?
Thanks.
