im going to loyola in a few weeks and i booked a hotel room near "the loop" (i think thats what the area is referred to as)

How can i get from south michigan ave to loyola?

is a cab the best route? subway? train?

thanks!

here's a link to the CTA's trip planner. It's basically a mapquest that will direct you in terms of CTA trains (the El lines) and buses. Loyola's medical campus is in Maywood, which is west of the city. It doesn't immediately come to mind what you would take from downtown to Maywood. If the directions from your hotel's address to the medical campus are too complex I'd just take a cab.

Either way, make sure you allow lots of time. After Loyola is generally where traffic clears up when heading out of the city (though it's only like 5-7 miles on the highway).

hey there, i agree with phoenix on contacting the school. the michigan ave/south loop is quite the cab ride away from loyola. i'd say at least $25 worth. if you'll be traveling in the morning, traffic on I-88 can be pretty bad even if its going out of the city and also (to me) I-88 is pretty unpredictable nowadays. taking the el is an option, but i don't believe it drops you off that close to loyola. i also wouldn't recommend walking around maywood all dressed up.

Loyola is off of I-290, quite a ways from where it turns into I-88. Calling the school will likely result in "Here's how to get in touch with the RTA," or "These are the driving directions." It will be an expensive cab ride indeed. The Blue Line ["El"] will take you as far as Forest Park, which is about a mile from the Loyola campus. Maywood during the day is perfectly safe to walk around in "all dressed up", it's just cold. There is a way to take the Blue Line and connect with a bus - check the RTA web site someone posted above. Personally, I'd eat the money and take a cab there. Even in rush hour traffic, it should only take you about 40 minutes from the Loop.

Good luck!

you might be able to take the metra train from the loop to maywood, im not too sure though...

Are you flying into Midway? If so stay at one of the airport hotels and take a cab to Loyola from there. It's 20 minutes at the most. If you are flying into O'Hare I'd suggest staying in Oak Brook. Much closer to Loyola than a South Michigan Avenue hotel. WHat hotel do you have your eservation at?

the hilton. i might just suck it up and take a cab.

ive extended my stay for a few days after, just to check out the city. i hear from everyone i know that chicago is amazing.

they tell me its a cleaner, friendlier new york.

is chicago one of those towns that shut down around 2am? deep dish recommendations?

Chicago is amazing and I would take it any day over NYC. You might do better hiring a car and driver. Cabs are okay but sometimes the drivers are less than desirable and they may not know their way out to Maywood. Be sure you go to Millenium Park and walk down North Michigan Avenue. I'm not a deep dish fan so I can't help you out there. Have fun.

Metra to Maywood, cab to the campus. Take the Union Pacific West line to Elburn, go to www.metrarail.com for the schedule

thanks for all of the feedback!

deep dish recommendations?

Lou Malnati's is hands down my favorite. They're all good, though. If you get Malnatis, make sure to get sausage. I don't like sausage on any other pizza, but their Chicago style basically slaps a circular slab of it on top of the cheese. Amazing.

As somebody said above, you definitely need to check out Millenium Park type area and the lakefront, though Chicago's kind of cold and ugly this time of year, try to imagine what it'd be like in the Spring/Summer/Fall. If you're a girl (or a guy who's a shopping enthusiast, I guess) I recommend taking a stroll along the magnificent mile on Michigan...lots of nice stores. There's all sorts of museums if you're interested in that(Shedd aquarium, Museum of Science and Industry, Field Museum, Art Institute ala Ferris Bueller...now that I think about it that movie probably has a few good ideas for you).

When you talk about the 2am thing I assume you're asking about bars and nightlife? For that I'd look to the north side...Lincoln Park or Wrigleyville (bar area surrounding Wrigley Field). For these I'd definitely use public transportation...both neighborhoods are just a shot on the Red El Line from downtown (The Fullerton stop puts you a couple blocks from the bars on Lincoln Avenue, and I think it's the Addison stop for Wrigleyville?). However, if you're a girl, I can't condone taking the red line back downtown alone at night (you'd probably be fine, but I'd still strongly consider taking a cab back to the hotel). Find a bar you're interested in, and use the CTA planner I linked above to direct you...it's $2 a ride for most public modes of transportation.

The skyline is gorgeous at night. My favorite view is from the Planetarium. Dress warm and good luck in your interview!

NJDIF, I second Lou Malnati's. If you want, PM me and we'll grab a drink/pizza. 🙂 Enjoy your trip!

If I recall correctly, Stritch sends you an interview packet, with public transportation info included. The hope is that it gets to you before you leave for your interview. (Seriously--it's pretty easy to take public transportation, and much cheaper than the cab. But, if you're super stressed about it, the cab may be a better way to do it.)
