Hi Im an MS IV at an allopathic school and I just have a question with regards to the research "requirement" to apply for cardiology. Right now I have 2 publications both in cardiology. One in pubmed the other just got accepted and is coming out in Jan. I have 3 more projects over my final months. One of the papers will be a basic science paper that has been going on for a while. I will have about 5 papers or abstracts by the time I apply during my second year. I hope that I can match into cardiology with just these. I have a son so I'm hoping that I will be able to spend time with him during residency and not worry about publishing. Will I need to do more research or is this enough? Would program directors frown upon no production during intern year?

No, I think you are good. Most interns realistically don't have time to do research...at my program we had 10.5-11 months of Q3 or Q4 overnight call...so nobody was doing research...just in survival mode. Just apply at beginning of 2nd year of residency and don't act uninteresting in research...just tell them you're planning to take up a project during PGY2/3 or try to sell them on your interest in following up on one of your prior projects at some point. Your program director and some cardiologist(s) at your residency program writing you a good LOR will matter more than getting more research publications.
