QUESTION: A couple of the schools I'm applying to are asking me for a recommendation from grad school professors. My dilemma is that I am in an MPH program that I just matriculated in. My professors have not had a chance to get to know me too exptremely well because I only have class with each of them 1 day a week. Do you all think that if I call these schools, explain my situation, and ask them to consider me without those extra letters it may work? I'm really worried about this especially since I already submitted my seconday for MCW along with my credit card number so they can charge me 100 bucks! Ouch! 🙁

My experience is that the schools who ask for letters from graduate programs REALLY want those letters as part of your application package. If you do not provide them you may be at a disadvantage.

I think the reason they want a letter from someone in your graduate program is to make sure you are "in good standing". I would NOT call the med school's and ask for an exception. You would be better off speaking with one of your professors and explaining your situation. Take in your personal statement and resume so they have some additional information about you. And, talk to them about how you want to influence health policy as a physician. They can put that in your letter. There are lot's of joint MPH/MD programs and there is a reason why!! It should help you. 🙂
