Hi, I just sent my application to SGU today to apply for January Admission. Admissions for January close on Nov. 15, so I already know that I am a long shot, but I just found out that I didn't get into medical school in the U.S. after a promising interview. This is my second time to apply to the U.S. and not get in. Anyway, I have a 28 MCAT, 3.0 GPA, and 3.4 BCPM GPA.

I applied to SGU this past spring, and I received an invitation for interview, but I declined because I got accepted to a post-bac master's program. I am doing well in the program, but I do not feel like waiting another two years to attend medical school.

Soooo...I was wondering what my chances might be this late in the admissions process.

Furthermore, I am married with a son and one more on the way. If anyone has any information, I would love to hear about the expenses living on the island with a family, and also, I would love to know how someone with a family can live in New York City to do clinicals.

don't know about the whole family thing but you're a huge long shot for the january class simply because by now chances are the class has been filled for a few weeks now. they accept people on a rolling basis meaning those that applied early got accepted early. What's going to most likely happen is that your application will be rolled over to the Aug class. That's what happened to me, and I sent my application in after calling up the school and them specifically saying that there were spots still available. Also just for your info SGU is really popular place, when i was in 4th term the dean of students told us there were 9 applicants for every spot in the in coming class.

If I were you I would finish up the post-bac program and see what happens. Also apply to DO school's you should be able to get in for sure. It's a lot easier to get a residency coming form a DO school then from SGU. Plus you'll be in the US. If you go to SGU the cost of living is pretty high, I cooked for myself and ate cheap things and spent $100 a week on food, with a family you'll spend probably close to $250 or more. Also if you go to SGU you don't have to live in NYC for clinicals you can do your clinicals in NJ, or you can live in brooklyn which is substantially cheaper than manhattan.

but if I were you I would seriously consider going to a DO school before going to SGU, nothing against SGU I loved it on the island and love the school, but I feel that you'll have a much better chance getting a residency from a DO school. But whatever you do don't drop out of the post-bac program that just looks really really bad. no one likes quitter.

also check out www.valuemd.com they have a whole forum dedicated to just SGU.

Finish the post-bac. It is worth it if it means getting into a US school.

Two years will not make a difference and raising kids in the Carib is a HUGE extra stressor.
