Anyone know if non science has to be a prof or empoyer? I've been out of school six years (I'm a post-bac) so my old humanities profs won't remember me and I just found out my undergrad advisor died last year.

Both the employers I worked for have since gone bankrupt and I can't find them either!!

Will a volunteer letter from a hospital work if it speaks about my interpersonal skills, blah blah, etc.?

Any help would be much appreciated -
this whole process is driving me nuts

I saw on another thread that some people in your situation called the schools. Some of the schools tell them that it's OK. Some other schools asked the applicant to email their deans directly, and some of them (except for Pitt?) said it was OK.

Sorry to be very vague... but I didn't have to substitute non-sci letter like you do. Just call the schools, ask for the dean's email if the administrative person does not know the answer, and attach the email to your app as a proof if the dean allows you to substitute the non-sci letter.

Good luck...

Send a PM to "stan" because he was in a similar position as you and got some good news in return.

He had a thread started two days ago and the subject was "Tweetie Bird" ...so do a search on it. Either that, or you can just search on the member name "Stan"
The gist is, that most schools will allow it. But check with him to find out which ones.
Good luck.

Hi lll505,

I happened to see this thread, so I'll tell you what I know. I have been out of school for two years, and I don't have a non-science (or humanities) LOR. Many schools including Vanderbilt, Creighton, Penn State, Yale, Pittsburgh, UIC and Jefferson do require a letter in this category. I didn't feel like going back to my university to get a letter from someone that hardly knows me, so I emailed each medschool and asked them if I could substitute my employer's letter for the non-science (or humanities) letter.

Vanderbilt, Yale, Penn State and Creighton granted my request, but I will have to explain why in my Penn State secondary (not for the others). The Univ. of Pittsburgh told me that they do not grant recommendation waivers for applicants who have attended school in the past five years. I have yet to hear from UIC and Jefferson.

I think I will go back and get a non-science letter, and submit it only to Pittsburgh. Since I know that my wonderful boss made me look like a saint I would like the schools to see this letter.

Hope this helps. Good Luck!

-Stan
