Title says it, I'm applying this coming cycle and am looking for places where I will be competitive.
Biochem Major. White. Nebraska born and raised.
My cGPA as of now is - 3.414. With the most recent 30 credit hours being a 3.8; my first three semesters I wasn't completely sure medicine was for me and was really lax about everything, as well as working to be a successful penny stock trader while taking classes.

I'm taking the MCAT either the first or second week in June. I took a Kaplan practice test a couple weeks ago and got a 32 as a diagnostic score. So I'm looking to bump that up a few points too.

I have ~25 hours of shadowing now (3 doctors) and have been on call with a trauma surgeon, will be shadowing him more throughout the semester.

150 hours of volunteering at a hospital, burn unit and ER (2 years). Main duty is talking with patients to provide them with the best possible stay.

1.5 years of research experience - presented research twice last summer.

Started PTSD fundraiser. Fundraising director for an Investment Club on campus (1 semester), Finance chair and athlete on the Water Ski Club team (started in Fall 2013). Member of pre-med club and success club. ~30 hours of miscellaneous volunteering.

Had a mishap last summer... got a disorderly conduct for urinating in an alley. Officer said if I were 3 feet farther in the alley he wouldn't have wrote me a ticket.

Letters of rec I believe I will be using: Trauma Surgeon, Education Director of Burn Unit, Head of Biochem department (boss), Bioc professor

Schools on my radar thus far:
UNMC
U of Arizona (Phoenix and Tucson)

not sure where else/what kind of competitiveness I present?

Thanks!!

The cGPA is < avg, but there are a number of schools that look at and favor good performance int he last 2-3 years of UG work. You'll need to do your homework on those. MSAR Online is your best friend.

This won't be an issue. Might make ofr an interesting interview question though!

I suggest sticking with the low tier MD schools like NYMC, Rosy Franklin, Albany, Loyola, Creighton etc.
Also include all new MD programs, and any DO program. If you're a NE resident' I'd skip the AZ schools. To be competitive for OOS publich schools, one needs to be > avg.

I might be wrong, but unless if you have any connections to the state or to UNMC, your chances for an II are slim there.

Thanks for your reply. Is there a way to search for that on MSAR? I have recently submitted my FAP, so depending on how that goes I will either pay for the MSAR or get it that way. If my trend continues my cGPA should be 3.51, I looked up the facts for Tucson, they had a GPA range of 2.93-4 (on their site) and Phoenix had a range of 3.08-4. Should I still skip them, even if AZ would be my dream state?

Would it also be good to include that during my first two years of college (when my GPA was subpar) that I had become ranked 8th/30000 members for % gain in 90 days for trading penny stocks? Analytical skills being shown?

And are you saying that the ticket won't be a problem? That will be a relief if so

I'm born and raised Nebraskan and go to the University of Nebraska currently.

MSAR requires a purchase, and is a very worthwhile investment.

For AZ-T, the 10-90th %ile for acceptees is 3.3-4.0 for cGPA, with the avg being 3.7. The taxpayers of the state are supplementing your education in the form of lower tuition. Hence, they're going to want someone above avg and likely to stay in the state and practice, of you're going to compete with kids on the home team. The kids with the very low GPAs are likely to be URMs, or have very large donation checks in hand. Hence, I do not think the AZ schools are good choices for you.

correct, the ticket will not be a problem. Don't know what to make of the stock trading.
