Need help deciding what to do for my gap years!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I abhor TFA. Others may disagree. I’ll just say the kids deserve someone who isn’t worried about this “really random activity” being “prestigious or cool” enough for you.
i definitely agree. i should actually elaborate. Actually this activity i would not be doing for solely prestige. There’s a TFA site 20 minutes (a town over) from where i went to high school, and i would whole heartedly enjoy being there and teaching science stuff. I would also be back at home ( I love my family) which would make everything bearable for me, i know it’s not supposed to be easy. i’m going to be completely transparent and say that americorp is something i would not have my heart in rather than TFA.

Does TFA let you pick your site? Do you get to pick the subject you teach? Do you know anything about the program? About public education? Being smart and liking science aren’t good reasons to teach.

Do you want to do service? From the way you phrase things, it doesn’t sound like it.
Yes you can pick your site, and yes you can pretty closely pick the subjects you teach (science vs english). And i have also talked to a few people that have done TFA as well. I am aware of the issues that are in that area, and what those kids have to go through and that my class is the last thing they’ll care about. And i gave you a general reply i’m not going to hash out an entire essay to explain my reasons.

And i’m indifferent to both service and research. What i was getting at there is I don’t want to close any doors or hurt myself at a lot of schools by making it seem like i’m not interested in their mission even though i am.

Fulbright and it’s not even close
see that’s what i thought but people in other threads were saying it’s not really that impressive. And besides the country where i am interested in and have the best chances of winning it in has a pretty high acceptance rate (25%).

It’s a self selecting thing. I know two people who have done it. One at Yale Medical school the other at HMS. They had good profiles besides the Fulbright but those are two tough schools to get into

Goro LizzyM Any thoughts on whether doing 2 years of research work or 2 years of community work would shut me out from schools with the opposite mission? Would it be better to have a more well rounded app (1 yr of each) or a defined commitment to one thing (2 years of either or)?
