I'm not sure what I should do. I want to pursue medicine and hopefully become a surgeon, but I feel like that dream has died down because the likelihood of that becoming possible seems more and more distant the more I think about it. I'm currently a fifth-year undergraduate student pursing a degree in Dietetics and Biology with a minor in French. My french minor GPA is 3.8, Dietetics major is 3.522, and Biology GPA is 2.868. I decided to pursue Dietetics because I believe that nutrition plays a critical role in one's health. I do plan to use the knowledge I gain from my Dietetics major in practice when I do become a physician or surgeon. My cumulative GPA is 3.212 and I have AMCAS GPA of 2.775 and ACCOMAS GPA of 3.024. If I were to get all A's, it would bring my GPA up to 3.4 and AMCAS GPA of 2.935 and ACCOMAS GPA of 3.281. I'm planning on taking my MCAT next July and will be studying a lot for the lack of better terms. I know my GPA isn't good, but like I said I want to pursue medicine. I don't see myself doing anything but becoming a physician. I have looked into post-baccalaureate programs and those seem like a feasible choice, but my parents don't want to spend any more extra money if there's a chance of me getting into a medical school. I have also thought about becoming a Registered Dietitian before applying to medical school, but I feel as though that I won't be happy becoming just a RD. I don't have an excuse as to why my grades were so terrible, but I'll say that I did not take advantage of the first and second year classes. I didn't learn which way was the best way for me to study until recently. I have an okay grade pattern, but since I have found out how to study, I hope to do really well during the remaining semesters. Any suggestions would be great! I know it's a lot to read through, but I do appreciate any personal experiences!

Your biggest hurdle I see and am afraid to say it is that your parents dont support your decision to pursue your academic pursuits given the "chance" you may not get in. Please understand you need to invest some financial investment ito a post bac or grade replacement. From what it looks, going down the DO route will get you to your goal of becoming a physician faster knowing the grade replacement option exists. Surgeon? I do not think you should think that far ahead. This process of making you become a presentable candidate may take up to two years.

I think for starters you need to have a long hard talk with your folks on this. You need to somehow make up for your deficits either through grade replacement or post bac.

Im not going to sit here and sing lullabies and make it soft and say dont worry because the path is def hard but If there is a will there is a way. If you want it bad enough you will find a way, if not youll find an excuse. Folks before you were in worse positions than you and are attending currently.

Good luck.

DO Grade replacement is your friend. Then get a good MCAT and some solid ECs. Forget about MD. In addition I agree with the post above 100%

Do you think it's better if I do well in my upper level science classes rather than do grade replacements?

NO, You need to replace the grades that brought you down. Doing well in upper division doesn't negate the lower failures. Just take all the pre-req's that you need to again and you will be fine.
