Hello everyone,

I have about 6 months left in my Masters MFT program that fulfills CA license requirements. I am thinking about getting into a post-masters PSYD program. I am interested in Alliant International University's PSYD in Couple & Family Therapy and The Chicago School of Psychology PSYD in the same subject. I know that these Doctoral programs will not allow me to become a licensed Psychologist. However, I am not sure that I want to perform the duties of a Psychologist. I would like to strictly stick to the therapy side of Psychology. My doctoral program would be completely paid for by a third party, which is awesome. I just wonder if I should go for a PSYD that will not allow me to become a licensed Psychologist? Any thoughts?

Why go through all of the time/effort/etc....and not really have anything to show for it? Sure you will have additional knowledge, but if you can't practice as a psychologist, so that really limits the usefulness.

I generally agree with the above--if you don't want to be licensed as a psychologist, your time might be better spent elsewhere, such as in intervention-related workshops and continuing education that would be more directly applicable to your daily practice.

And I would ask: If the degree does not lead to licensure as a psychologist, and you do not want to be one, why would you consider going to a program that does lead to licensure?

The obvious other question is, why would this particular program benefit you? It sounds like a doctoral-level MFT program. Do you want to teach or something? What's in it for you? Are you aiming to do it because your tuition is being paid and you want to advance your knowledge?
