I've come across a few people saying " Clinical and scientific research." As I understood it, clinical was dealing with charts, pts etc and "scientific" being bench research.

I'm interested in both, and wanted to mention that in my personal statement. Would it sound right if I phrase it as " clinical and scientific research"?

Thank you.

Scientific means use of the scientific method. That's controlled, hypothesis-driven research. Clinical research can be scientific. I don't think anyone would argue that a double-blind placebo controlled clinical trial is not both scientific and clinical research.

What you are looking for is "basic" research, sometimes called "bench" research.

Thank you for the reply. Would "clinical and laboratory" research sound appropriate? or you think " clinical and basic" is better, correct way to phrase it.

Either is fine imo. I would still go with "clinical and basic science" research if it were me. But, I think it's just splitting hairs to talk about how clinical diagnostic/prognostic/outcomes research can involve the laboratory or lab test results .

Here are a few terms that are useful when thinking about types of biomedical research: patient-oriented research, disease-oriented research, translational research. I won't define these terms here, but you can look them up and it should clarify things a bit. Sounds like you want to do translational research.
