  1. Medical Student (Accepted)

I wanted to get some opinions on my situation. So I have been fortunate to be accepted at KCUMB and LECOM-Bradenton. I feel that KCUMB is a better fit for me as a medical student, however I am from Central Florida and LECOM is a better fit for my personal life. I am married and my wife and I are expecting our first child this coming July. Both her family and my family live in Orlando, so going to LECOM would be a good idea because my wife and I would have some help taking care of our baby. Also, I am not sure that PBL is the best fit for me as a student. I have also been waitlisted at Nova, so I am hoping to hear back from them sometime soon because that would be a great option for me.

LECOM is by far your most affordable option out of all three schools. Minimizing the debt for your family would be the most responsible thing to do plus having a support system close by is also very important.

Congrats on the first child! I think going to LECOM-B would be the best for both you and your family. My very close colleague is there right now and said it's good because it's flexible and allows you to study on your own time while having responsibilities to work with a group.

If you get off the Nova WL then I would take that over LECOM-B.

I would have generally gone with the other posters' advice if it was not for the bold text. Curriculum delivery is pretty important. If you aren't sure about PBL, I would think long and hard about going to a place where that is the only curricular offering. Its great to have convenience of being close to home and being convenient for family, but if you aren't big on PBL, I would think about this seriously before you sign on for it. Just food for thought.

Go to lecom. I believe you'll find a way to make pbl work. Benefits of being close to friends and family with a newborn are immeasurable.

I remember walking out of my interview at LECOM-B thinking I would rather reapply than attend that institution.

If you can make it work then more power to you. You have more patience than I do.

Thanks for the input everyone! After thinking it over, I've decided to attend KCUMB and wait to see if NSU accepts me off the waitlist later on. Do you guys think it might be a good idea to defer a year since it might be a little hectic with the baby being born in July and me leaving for med school around the same time?

Thats something only you can answer. On the one hand, every year you are not in school, you are deferring an attending physician's salary (obviously very helpful for your family).

But if you dont think you and your wife will be able to handle it, then hold off.

Personally, if you do come to KCUMB, sort of joking, but actually quite serious here, my wife is big about helping out people with new babies. Heck even as I type this she is babysitting all day for a girl in her masters program haha. If its even just an n=1, you would have some support at KCUMB. You allowing my wife to oodle over a baby, helps keep the "baby bug" down and thus postpone us having our own little spawnling haha.

line up your wife's pregnancy with when embryology is in the curriculum for the win.
