hello everyone! i graduated from high school in may, and i am attending a local community college in the fall. i am planning on transferring out to Iowa State University for Pre-Veterinary. But I am honestly freaking out, because i am reading all of the posts on here, and all of your GPA's and test scores, and volunteer hours, and i feel like i am VERY behind.

I graduated high school with 8 science credits, i think my final GPA was around a 3.2.

What are my chances of getting accepted to a Graduate Program from a Community College? I dont think they are very good, but for the JUST IN CASE reason i need to stay at Community college, I would like to know if i have any chances :/

I do volunteer at a few places, but how much volunteering should i do?

Is there any suggestions on what i can do?

Please help me out, becoming a veterinarian is a dream of mine. I am very glad i found this forum 🙂

thanks everyone!<3

Nobody will care what your high school GPA is when you apply to grad school. You don't even report it. The only impact it may have is if you apply to an undergrad program, I suppose. That said, 3.2 is not TOO low, but it's lower than you want. Buckle down, be disciplined, and do better in your college-level classes. Sorry if that sounds harsh. 🙂

If you're just out of high school, you've got a couple years minimum before you would apply to vet school, presumably. You want to roll into your vet school applications with at least 500 hours of veterinary experience. More is better, but I think that's a reasonable lower-end number (I had less, I think). So project forward with your volunteering to make sure you hit (at least) that mark. Make sure your hours are veterinary and not just animal related.

Make sure the CC courses you take will meet the requirements of the vet schools at which you want to apply. Some/many/most CCs don't have the upper level courses you'll need, but you ought to be able to pick up just those courses at a state college or university. (I was able to do all mine at the same CC, though.)

You aren't behind if yer just out of high school. The biggest thing you need to do now is look at vet school application requirements and start making a long-term roadmap so that you're well situated to apply. You need to think multiple-years long term, not 'next semester'.

Orgain chem and bio chem at least have to be taken at a 4-year school. Some vet schools also require further upper-division classes (genetics, micro, physiology, etc...) which can't be taken at a CC.

I would suggest you be calm about it. You have 2 years at least before you start applying. Just get a plan, focus, and get good grades for now.

I agree with everyone else, take it one step at a time. Start looking into what vet schools you plan to apply to now and if you have any question as to whether a class you're taking at CC counts, call or email them to find out! I graduated college and decided later to become a vet and the price difference between classes at the CC and 4 year school I went to was about $400 per credit hour! So, I got together the course descriptions from both schools of the classes I needed to take (just O. chem, Biochem, and Microbiology) and called to find out if the CC class would cover the requirements. I lucked out and the O. Chem and the Microbiology class offered at the CC actually covered the requirements and I just had to take Biochem at the 4 year school 🙂. So, call and find out when in doubt.

oh my gosh, thanks everyone 🙂 i'm awaiting my college schedule and than im going to call ISU to see what transfer's. thanks!!! and this is a long term goal of mine, and i am willing to do whatever it takes 🙂 <3

i was going to attend ISU in the fall, but my parents screwed me over right before the deadline, they said they'd pay the depoist and cosign loans but the day before it was all due, they said no. so i'm trying to redo everything and fix it before my sophmore year of college

I think it might depend on the school?

That's definitely possible, but the quote I was replying to just said "Orgain chem and bio chem at least have to be taken at a 4-year school."

Which isn't correct universally, at least. 🙂

I try to correct it when incorrect information is propagated to peeps early in the process trying to map out their plans, that's all!

Well, around me at least, there is no CC that offers Ochem.

But if you can find it at a CC then go for it.
