Hi.. everyone

I am wondering if anyone of you can help with my problem. Do you know anyone that get into pharmacy school that had previously been on academic probation? I am trying really hard to bring my GPA back as much as I can. My current GPA is 1.7. I am a Junior at a University. What do you think I should do? Should I just forget about pharmacy and go to different field? I really wanted to be a pharmacist and it is my dream to get into one of the pharmacy school. If you think i should change my career, then what do you think what my plan B should be? Thank you so much for help.

I did not party, so don't think that it is the reason why i am getting the grades i am getting. I did study hard, but luck is not on my side. 🙁

It all depends on your circumstances. Were you ill, injured, taking care of a sick relative, etc? All of these things are reasonable to "bounce" back from--you just need to really start over and keep focused on doing the best you can. Retake classes if needed, too. When schools look at transcripts for applicants, they see the "progression"--if you've turned yourself around and started doing well in classes, they will see it.

You may want to get a job as a CPhT and/or volunteer in a pharmacy setting. Once you are ready to apply and interview, you will have an interesting perspective--from a person who was hit hard and worked hard to come back from it. Adcoms LOVE that. Be sure to come up with a game plan for your classes, work, and volunteering to make yourself the best candidate you can be.

Lets be real, you didnt study. If I didnt study and got an A on a test, that would be considered luck....If you did study and not get a good grade, then you didnt study the correct stuff or you didnt study at all...

I am not going to tell you not to pursue pharmacy, but I will tell you there are millions of people in the USA that have better gpa's than you, and a percentage of those people want to be pharmacist.

If you have a 1.7 GPA, you won't get into a pharmacy school. Sorry

This is true, but you're only a junior. Retake classes you failed and any C's and D's until your GPA is around 3.0. I did really bad my first three years too, and I was also on Academic Probation at the end of my junior year. I turned it around so I wouldn't lose my scholarship, and got A's and B's senior year. Then a couple years later when I decided to apply for pharmacy school, I replaced my C's with A's (only the science/math ones). I also retook the PCAT until I was happy with my score (3 times). I got interviews everywhere I applied this year.

However, if you really are studying, and you are still getting bad grades, you are studying incorrectly. Clearly whatever you are doing is not working, so don't be afraid to change it up! The best technique I've found is to study with one other person. Help each other study and compete to see who can get the best grade.

Good luck!

I noticed the #1 reason to bad grades despite studying hard is "time management." This includes when you are "studying" but do not focus on the subject matter. Thus wasting your time and resulting in bad grades.

So, the key things is to FOCUS. Easier said then done. What has worked for me is allocating a time like Math (from 3-5pm), surf the web(30min), dinner, study chem(7-9pm).

I know this is an annoying question. Do you have a calendar and do you use it? Recommend a Big Year Calendar, where you can see all 12months, and write all the due dates of projects on them. If you like, you can even color cordinate, like red for math, blue for chem, etc.

Also, you can get advice from your University Career Center. So stop by and pick up some brochures. 🙂

Here is a website, that is not related to school but has some tips on time management.

Kudos on your drive to do better! 👍

It might be really hard to bring up your GPA much if you are already a junior. Some schools are going to average all the grades even if you re-took the class. My advice is to find the schools that only look at the highest grades. I've also read about a few schools who do Academic Forgiveness after so many years. Basically they just ignore all old grades. Try doing a search for it on here.

I think if you really want to pursue pharmacy you can do it, but you are going to REALLY have to want it.

Thank you for your comments! 😳

I know it is hard for some of you guys to understand the situation. There are people that study the night before the test and ace it. There are aslo people that are like me, who study for weeks but end up getting Ds, and Cs. I just found it hard for me to understand things sometime. Maybe I am not good at taking tests. I volunteered at the pharmacy in clinics. I just kinda lost hope that i can still do it.. i just feel worthless. Now, i am having hard time believing in myself.

You're going to need to bring those grades up. Retake them and ace them. Get a tutor.

If you really think that pharmacy is for you, retake those classes you had lower than C's. And try to do your best and work hard. Not only that, if you need help, don't be afraid to ask the teacher, other students, or tutors. I went on academic probation twice in the same year. And averaged a 1.0 GPA within 37 semester hours. So, if you're willing to perservere and keep at it, you could definitely make it. 🙂

I understand that you are down because you haven't performed at your best. But keep your head up. Try a different approach... if you aren't good at taking tests, you could talk to people at your school because there could be more options with taking test (like extended time, etc).

Just try your BEST... study to a point where you feel that you really could not have done anything else (you really gave it your all). Talk to your teachers after class/office hours, make study groups, get free tutoring at your school. Whatever you do... just make sure that you put 100% into it... because you don't want to look back 10 years from now and think "i wish i had done things differently."

Best of luck :luck:

You have to ask urself can u do it? I mean pharmacy is much more difficult than university work for the most part so if ur having so much trouble then maybe its not for u. I mean u can raise ur gpa depending on how many credits u have already, u need to start making as much A's and B's as possible C's are out of the question now. If u can start to make 3.0 and above u have a great chance, if u cant then u will have to do something else after all not everyone can be a pharmacist, doctor, dentist etc im not saying U cant im saying if u cant improve from now onwards then its unlikely. Also, look into taking the maximum amount of classes in the summer that will help u further even if it cost alot of money then take loans. gl

You can still get into Pharmacy schools, but you're gonna have to go to Pharmacy schools that do not participate with PharmCAS.

PharmCAS is an idiotic invention for lazy administrators. It averages in all classes you take.
I dont get it. Does that make any diff if you apply to school NOT using pharmcas regarding GPA ? How is it diff, can you explain ?

I was in your shoes a few years ago. I was an electrical engineering major for 4 semesters and my GPA went to 1.7. I switched majors to molecular biology and gotten straight A's since. Now, after 90 credits of straight A's with 7 credits of Bs I'm at a 3.15, considering over half of the credits were upper divisional science courses and the other half were pre-reqs. The thing is that all my pre-reqs were A's and I never had to retake any of them. I was told I was in a good position by other people and my prehealth advisor but I was skeptical and regret my engineering attempts. I have research and a medical trip to Honduras under my belt. I also am the founder of an International Medical Outreach program at my school. My life took at 180 turn and that's what you have to do. I got accepted to University of Florida which is one of the top pharmacy programs. And if I can do it, then you can do it. Good luck to all of who are on this boat!
