Hello everyone,

I am new to this forum and was wondering if someone out there wud help me.

I am from India and have been accepted into the International program for dentists at a reputed institution. However I seem to have a bad case of last minute jitters,I cant help wondering if Im doing the rite thing.

I was wondering if dentistry is as lucrative as most ppl claim considering the huge tuition fee.

I was also wondering if I shud consider dental hygiene.

Any help wud b appreciated.

Depends. I know of a dentist struggling to pay his student loans. He happens to be an international and is working as an associate. He wants to open his own practice, but due to his residency status no one will give him loans to open a practice and that is where the money is. I think he said until he becomes a full US citizen which takes a long time to get, he can't get loans for a practice and if he could they are at very high interest rates and not worth it.

simple question: would you be happy being a hygienist? I look at it always as an investment in myself and the things that I would be happy doing in the future. If you would be happy as a hygienist then go for it...

i was wondering if associates arent paid well.

coz if ur friend is then y wud he have a problem repaying his loans.

Is it me or there's a new trend of going into dentistry because it's "lucrative"?
Go sell used cars. It's very "lucractive", seriously.

Here is the truth, the dentist that owns the practice does not care how much student loan debt, house mortgage, credit cards, or any other debt you have. In comparison to the rest of americans, an associate dentist makes a very good salary, but its hard to support yourself with a lot of school debt. The dentist will only pay his associate whatever the market allows and not a penny more.

My buddy told me he makes around $100k a year, but after he pays uncle sam over 1/3 of his wages in taxes, rent, food, utilities, car payment (he has a regular car nothing fancy), there isn't much left to cover his loans. He is actually working with his lender now to try and work out a plan so that he doesn't fall behind and ruin his credit, but that is only a temp. solution.

A dentist might make $$$, but it cost $$$ to get there so it balances out. Unfortunatly, a US dentist has many many more opportunities than an international and that is something to consider.

Here is a quote I read when I went to Ellis Island last week that an immigrant wrote 90 years ago and I think it fits very well here:

"When I was in my home country, people told stories of how in America the cobble stone streets were made of gold. When I got here I noticed the streets were not made of gold, they did not even have cobble stone, and I was the one expected to lay the stone on these streets."

Becareful of things you hear such as dentistry being " the land of gold in america" because there are lots of costs people do not tell you about. Even as an owner, you will pay 60% in overhead costs.
