I have a low mcat score 2 times and decent sci gpa...about 3.5....I received an invitation to fill out a secondary recently(past week) from a school..

i took the mcat in august 04 and august 05 and did worse in aug 05...now I had a unique personal statement which probably offset my low mcat score...I called the school to just to make sure they had both scores because I got an interview from another school and in the interview they didn't have my aug 05 scores (pist me off)....did not get into that school
The school said they had the august 05 score so that means they invited me even after they saw I did worse than my aug 04 mcats (which is also a bad score)...thats the good news..they said they reviewed my primary and wanted me to fill out a secondary

now here's the question, in the secondary, it asks:

Do you plan to take the MCAT in aug 05? yes or no
Do you plan to retake the MCAT? yes or no
If so, when do you plan to retake the MCAT? april 06 or aug 05

Should I put down april 06?? The point of these questions is vague to me...does it mean if i take the april 06 mcat will they accept me for fall 06 if i do well? I havn't started studying hardcore because I have an acceptance into a caribbean school and planned on going there...I would study my ass offffff if this school that invited me to fill out a secondary would accept april 06 score..but why would they put it on there or do that? does this mean I still have a chance for fall 06 if i take the april mcat 06?..i don't understand...what are peoples' suggestions here.. what would you do...

Well I dont think you should sell yourself short. If you have an acceptance thats one thing. But what ive realized in my short time of my existence is that hard work DOES pay off. So study and good luck to you 👍

i know people are reading this...please any suggestions

bump

maybe we could gauge a little better if we knew what your mcat was..both times..and exactly how much lower was it the second time around

Shaggy, a friend of mine was in the same situation and she just put down that she would retake immediately again when it was offered ....in your case April??? (of course you can always put down Aug. but not sure if that will help you) that way the admin. committee knows that you are serious and you are willing to re-take otherwise you it may seem as if you are happy with your current MCAT scores..... you can do it!! Focus! What helped me was doing like a million prac. test questions. when i tookt the real thing it was a breeze... good luck to you.

I think we would be able to help you if there were more specifics. What were the break down of your scores? And what schools did you apply to? Where did you get an interview? What school is sending you the supplementary? When was your app complete?

An acceptance to a Caribbean school isn't bad at all. There are people I know that were initially unwilling to do osteopath that decided to apply to the caribbean. But didn't even get an interview yet. And right now they're sending off their aacom app. Anyway, back to you. Which school did you get an acceptance from? Ross? Saint Georges?

I'm always around to help. 😛

I don't know if ihave enough time to prepare...i got a 5, 6, 7 first time (v, p, b) and 5, 6, 6 second time...

Getting an amazing score like a 42 on the MCAT in April 2006 would more than likely not help you get into med school August 2006. You will get your MCAT scores in mid-June 2006 and classes should all be full by April/May.

They are giving you an interview which means they saw something in your application to feel you are worthy of an acceptance based on a good interview. Get your interview skills together. You may get questioned on the MCAT so prepare for that. Own this interview if you prefer the DO school over carribean.

The question about when do you plan to take the MCAT again is a generic question in my opinion. I saw a secondary asking for my ACT/SAT scores. WTF? 😱

If you answer no have a reason why. If you answer yes be able to say what you are going to do differently.

If you started your prep Feb 1st you would have about 10 weeks which is enough time to do well on the MCAT with a solid study program.

Put that you are not retaking, send in secondary. If you don't get in, take MCAT in August if there's not enough time to prepare. I know there are people to get in with that score, however, they usually have a really high GPA. You never know!

How could you put down August 05? You can't plan on doing something in the past.

Retaking the MCAT in April will not help you for the entering class of 2006. It WOULD help you for the entering class of 2007, but it doesn't seem like you will be around for that, so put "NO" on retaking.

if i answer no, and they ask why aren't you taking it? my reason is because I received an acceptance to a caribbean school- I feel akward saying that because I'm all about osteopathy..and I do not want them to get the feeling that I am not serious about DO school...I don't know where I could go with this..

actually they havn't given me an interview..this is just to fill out a secondary...so I'm wondering if they see that I want to ttake the april 06 mcat they will see that I'm not giving up and willing to try again showing that I medical school is somethign I really want to do...if I don't put april 06 what would they think with such low mcat scores? "I'm giving up" I hope they wouldn't think that..

You need to retake it if you don't get in and don't want to go to the carribean. Put YES on the application. If you get in... they aren't going to make you retake.

I got the MD/DO question in a few interviews and my answer might fit into your situation. You can tell them you aren't going to retake the MCAT b/c you have an acceptance. Then if they come at you with the Md/DO angle which they most likely will (since your acceptance is a carribean MD), Just tell them you are more interested in osteopathy (OMM and dif. approach angles) which is why you would rather go to an osteopathic school however if the situation were to stand as is you would take your acceptance since you end goal is to become a 'doctor', you dont really care about the letters after you name, and you don't want to waste any more time raising your scores since you have an opportunity to move foward towards this goal right now.

I totally dig that answer! 😛

yeah, i agree with him and with HunterGatherer. i think the questions on the form are pretty standard (say, for people who are applying during the summer and might re-take the test in august). it seems to me that you should just emphasize how much you appreciate osteopathy (any questions on the secondary about it?) and really think about whether you WANT to re-take the test or not. i doubt a score in mid-summer will help you get in for this upcoming fall and studying in the upcoming weeks may be unnecessary stress. work with what you have - one school has already seen your possible potential; emphasize the positive! 👍

if you're still not sure, maybe call the school and ask their advice on whether putting yourself through it all again would help?

and hey, one acceptance to a medical school is all ya need! good luck!
