Friend of mine is considering regional fellowships, and has acceptances to multiple places.

She is down to Virginia Mason versus Pitt. Heading to PP s/p fellowship.

I haven't heard much about regional at Pitt (that doesn't necessarily mean much). On the interview trail Virginia Mason was widely regarded as one of the best in the country. If it were me and I had no location restriction I'd go with VM.

Don't know a thing about Pitt, but I have spent time at VM.

Biggest drawback, you are paid at the R5 level and no more. No moonlighting to increase your income. When it comes to the end of the day, you act as an attending, but are paid a resident salary. Of course there is nothing to say you can't moonlight elsewhere in town. This may have changed in the last 12 months, but I doubt it.

However, they have a truly awesome faculty and program. Very forward thinking in terms of technology and procedures. Buy in from the surgeons and the nurses which is equally important to having good faculty. You have the guys who wrote the textbooks on old-school stimulator and anatomical techniques like Dr. Batra with young guys who excel with U/S like Dr Auyong and Dr. Joseph. Then you have guys like Dr. Bernards who will sit there and blow holes in all of the academic dogma you have learned over the past 8 years. I doubt there is a better place to get ready for the orals with good reviews every day.

All in all VM would be an AWESOME place if you can put up with receiving a ACGME level salary without being in an ACGME fellowship.

Pitt? Never heard of it being good for regional.

when anyone thinks Regional Anesthesia...they usually think Virginia Mason OR Hosp for Special Surgery (not even sure if they have a fellowship, but they are known for their regional since it's an ortho hosp).

If you want to go to a plce with a 'name'...VM for sure.

VM-no doubt-
Pitt is too high on themselves....

doesn't answer your q, but if others interested in reg look at this thread, don't leave out Duke. very good reg program, and you can moonlight to your heart's content. great money making opportunities. auyoung, ref'd above at VM as great at U/S, trained at Duke.

Thanks for all the great feedback. It's helped my buddy out. 👍

Please add more as it comes in...

I don't know much about VM other than it's reputation.

Pitt does have Jacques Chelly at their program (search Amazon for his regional textbooks), and after speaking with some recent graduates from the residency there, it sounds like the regional program is excellent.

we have an attending at our program that finished residency at Pitt and is incredible at regional without even doing the fellowship, for what it's worth.

I'll be the first to admit Pitt is way too high on themselves, but they do have some excellent programs regardless.
