Hi everyone, I would appreciate anyone's opinion and input in my dilemma, so here it is: Due to personal issues I 'm not able to apply to lots of schools, only to two. My top choice of the two (bc of commute distance and price) rejected me (even with interview) in the other one I was accepted, I really like the school and am happy to be accepted there, but I would have to travel 2 hrs each way everyday , plus they are about 30 K (over the 4 yrs) more expensive. So I thought of making an appointment with the pharmacy program advisor from where i was rejected and ask them why and how I can better my file for next year, to apply with them again OR just forget about it and take what I have and not risk ending up with nothing next year, thus just start in august despite the fairly big difference in future debt and commute.

Thank you to anyone who takes the time to read this and give me their opinion/advice

If your not in a rush and really want to go to the school you were rejected from then I would wait. May I ask why you chose only to apply to two schools?

If you find that the reasons for rejection can easily be improved to better your chances for next year then I dont see a problem in waiting. A year is nothing. It will go by so fast and you can do so much in that year to improve your application.

Way back in the 50s, I just applied to one school of pharmacy. Was told they were full up for that year, so did my two years apprenticeship instead and entered uni in 1954.

I only applied to 2 schools because they are the only 2 that are within a distance i can commute to. As far as waiting, I woulld..if i wasn't 29 already😳, what i'd have to improve is get more pharm tech exp, but then again, that doesnt guarantee 100 % they would accept me next year, so I'd be risking not getting into anywhere at all

I know one person in my class who drove 1 hr 15 min to get to campus every single day. After classes, she goes home to her family who live 1 hr 15 min away from school. She has done this the entire semester without a problem. Back in undergrad, she also drove to school, but she drove 1 hr 30 min to get to school in the morning, and then drove 1 hr 30 minutes back home. I believe she did this for at least several years.

The driving may seem like a lot, but once you make the commitment, it gets a little easier. It may always be difficult to drive so early in the morning, but if you ever decide to do this, then it will be worth it in the end. Even though professors may discourage that because you would be losing time that you could spend studying. In that case, you could look into moving somewhere closer to campus. I know many people at school who are married and/or have kids, but they moved closer to campus from their hometowns and go home to their families during breaks like thanksgiving.

If you want to take a chance with the other school and apply again, then that is your choice. But if you start at the other school, you can start working one year earlier as a pharmacist. If you think that choosing to drive 2 hrs each way to school everyday for 4 years is worth being a pharmacist for one more year in your life, then I'd say go for it. If not, then spend that one year in college doing what you want to do and taking classes that interest you or motivate you to work harder.

It is really only driving for 3 years because your last year is all rotations. There is a good chance you may be able to set up rotations closer to where you live. A 2 hr commute is not fun, but I also had a few classmates that commuted quite a distance and it ended uo being ok. Can you take a train or something? That way you may be able to get work done during the commute. 30k over 4 yrs isn't that bad...

Tough call...you could take a chance and try to apply to the other school, knowing that you still may not get accepted.

thanks everyone....I really would wait another year, IF there was a guarantee that they'll take me next year, after I improve my file, but there's not, then I'll never be a pharmacist, bc if I reject the school that did accept me this year, most probably they won't consider me for next. And yes, I never though it could be humanly possible to waste 4 hours each day in pharmacy school, so i'll be taking the train for 1. 45 hrs each way , and those 3 hrs will be part of the daily study time. Not as bad...😳
but then there's also the money issue, i'll end up with 30 extra K at the end, but it's true that it would even out bc i would have one more year of pharmacist salary

'driving to school'? A bit different in the UK where majority have to walk, cycle or use the bus or train. Throughout my time at uni I commuted into London by train for an hour or so, having walked a mile to get to the station.

Why wait another year? If you go to pharmacy school now, you would graduate a year earlier than if you would go next year. In that year, you can make a lot more than $30,000. You don't want to have regrets later.

To think ideally, sure, wait a year.
But realistically, I say just go to the school you were accepted to. 30k is easily paid off with your future salary. If you got rejected from your top choice this year, and the applicant pool gets more competitive, what are your chances of getting accepted if your stats dont change, right?
I say if you really want to be a pharmacist, and don't want to risk a future you could have, do the commute. Or maybe even get a studio apt near the campus if that's possible.
