One of my classes got cancelled and now I'm frantically looking for another to fill in the gap (don't you just love the start of a new semester?). I found an Intro to Sociology which fullfills a prereq of one of the pharmacy schools I'm looking at, but the only open session is on Thursday night from 6-8:30pm.

Frankly, I want an easy, no-brainer class since I have more important science classes to focus on. Is sociology doable, especially if it's one day per week?

I had an easy time with it. Most of it is really common sense. It really shouldn't be a difficult class...That's why it's an "intro" class. It's a class that should grab your attention for sociology. And in all honesty, it's a valuable class...good connection to the real world. Another class I'd take with sociology is psychology. Both subjects compliment each other quite well - both with different emphasis of study, but tackle same questions. So, I say go for it..you'll need to take it anyway. Most gen education are typically "light" courses - at least in my experience they have been.

Look on ratemyprofessors.com to see how the professor is.

Most people at my school found soc. pretty easy. I had one of the worse sections (only one open) so I got a B+, but I guess that's not too bad of a grade either if you're doing well in other courses. I honestly didn't enjoy it at all, but I didn't put much work into the class (maybe 2-3 hours a week).

it's common sense........BUT you have to study the vocab words etc.

you need a good couple days to learn all the material before a test. at least that's what i did :/

I agree. Sociology is rather easy but I had a very difficult professor. The average in my class was a 64 I think. Other than that I had friends who all had easier teachers where the average was 80 and up. But it all depends. Good luck and hope things go well.

Sociology and psychology were my FAVORITE classes ever...I would take it for fun. LOL...I actually read for fun in those classes. They are very interesting and fun classes you will love them.

Stop the music. Granted I took these stupid social science classes at a UC, I found these classes to be very frustrating for a few reasons. THEY ARE SO SUBJECTIVE. You can have a question as simple as (and I did), "what is racism?" Then the next thing you know you're getting a B- on your essay for various reasons and this and that. Not having a definitive answer to a question leaves you open for bullet wounds to the face, chest, and groin (more specifically the pudendal nerve, then the next thing you know you have no control over your penis). Way too much subjectivity in the grading of these subjects and with a science background, this will drive you up the wall.

I think it's completely doable, I've done it before. Just try to stay awake until class is over

I agree, I hated Intro to Soc.. my TA made up words and couldn't remember definitions (it's a whole bunch of vocab words already, I didn't need him making things up, too).. the whole class was basically taking something very inherent, like, children learn by observing their parents, and assigning a technical name to it ("primary socialization"). It was a ton of reading and the teacher actually went off on a rant after the first test telling us if we didn't do well on the test we were destined to fail out of college!

Besides the total pain factor of it, going to class definitely wasn't necessary, as long as you can memorize the vocab words and key ideas/people - which should, as someone else said, require just a couple of days before the test. Easy.

Thanks for the input everyone. I signed up for the class and will be taking it tonight. I took AP Psych in high school and did pretty well, and I'm usually good at humanities courses anyway so I'm hoping for the best with this course and my semester.

My advice to you...CLEP out of it. It's a relatively "light" class, and you should not have too much trouble studying for it. The test will cost you less than $100 ($60+whatever additional fee the test center charges for administering the test), and you will free up your time and save your tuition money.

I CLEPed out of Principles of Management, a 300-level class. What I did: looked up PowerPoints for the course online, printed them out, read them, took the test.

^Nah, I wouldn't ditch a class like sociology (I might contemplate doing that with other subjects, but not my behavioral sciences). A lot of the issues in healthcare revolve around people themselves...Sociology will give you a better idea of how people think and how you should respond to them. It's really robbing of you a valuable learning experience. Then again, I don't know how much people really value their education. You really have to soak up the experience & have an open mind throughout your college education. I hate it when people devalue a class just because it has nothing to do with what you want to do...NOTHING is a waste of time, in my opinion.

Absolutely. If you like to write papers and read books this class is very much doable. You should have no problem.
