Hello,

I have an interview coming on 17th...but i have a problem. I cannot talk like second day already I got a bad cold .I tried to spray my throat with chloroseptic, inhaling heated vapor, gargle warm salt water, plus tylenol cold and cough syrup...DOES NOT WORK. I still cannot talk plus I literally feel like air goes down to my lungs and back.

I really dont want to reschedule my NYCOM interview, but I need at least get my voice back. What do u think I have to do to bring back my voice?
or i should go ahead and reshedule the interview...🙁

Hmm, the interview is in 2 days so I would say just go ahead and go. I mean can you literally not speak at all or is it just a weak squeeky voice? If you have any voice at all just go because rescheduling this late in the cycle unless they can reschedule you to next week or somthing may hurt you.

why not calling the school and seeing what they think you should do. In 2 days it might be better anyway though. Good Luck!:luck:

He/she cannot talk!!!!!!!! I suggest you have someone else call for you or you can email them asap. I think if you rest yourself and not talk you will be okay in two days. Good luck with your interview.

Thanks guys sorry it is a double post, my computer acting up. I will try to follow all advices that SDNers gave me about getting back my voice and hope it will get better.

Have spoonfulls of pure honey and drink lots of OJ ... TRUST ME on this one

I hope you feel better

Dale Carnegie has a chapter where he talks about letting other people sell themselves on your ideas. He gives the example of a salesman that shows up to give a pitch and then ends up with laryngitis. Anyways...one of the other people in the room realizes he can't speak so he takes on the role of the salesman (though he owns the company) and they end up all selling themselves on his products and he didn't say a word........ I'm not saying this is going to apply to medical school interviews, but hey there could be a bright side here

Lifelong singer here...definitely lemons and warm water. Also rest your voice just as much as you can between now and then...don't talk AT ALL. Write messages on a notepad if that's what it takes. Then the morning of, maybe have a soda. Sometimes the acidity can help clear out some of the crud. Good luck! They're doctors; they'll understand!

Edited to add...can you fit in a doctor's appt before you go? If there's any type of infection, you can get antibiotics. A steroid shot also might help.

yogi throat comfort tea. you can find it at most food stores. i was at a public radio station for a few years and this was my best friend. it's a few bucks more than other teas but TOTALLY worth it. when drinking it, try to let it rest on the back of your tongue. damn, i think i'm gonna have a cup right now.

it has worked for many of my friends too...i wished the company paid me to talk them up.

Also a singer, I echo the lemons, but my formula was always equal parts lemon & honey in hot water. I don't always use tea because the tannins can be more irritating.
Guaifenesin 400-600mg q4-6 h to help break up mucus is helpful...drink LOTS of water with this. Your nose will be running.
If desperate, oral prednisone 40-60 mg/d x 3 days can be a lifesaver to reduce laryngeal edema and for quick healing. It's safer than the steroid shot but of course side effects.
I had the flu...really, influenza...the day of my PA school interview (gosh, nine years ago). I was literally popping ibuprofen and drinking TheraFlu from a thermos all day long. My voice completely quit by my third interview. Brutal. I really could not reschedule because it was the last day of interviews for that cycle. I felt awful all day (really, I washed my hands a million times and hope I didn't get anybody else sick). I got in 😀
But if your school is more flexible with interviews and your voice isn't there, it doesn't hurt to ask for a reschedule.
Good luck,
Lisa

Thanks a lot guys, I try lemon tea and also honey and ginger...Can whisper now, but if I try to talk it sounds really bad.

I have this problem every year around the same time...I get a small cold and lose my voice. I just drink EVERYTHING hot, warm up your drinks or drink a lot of tea etc, try to speak as little as possible dont strain your voice, get plenty of rest drest warm and you should be good in a couple of days. I try writing things down instead of talking all the time too. Good luck, hope youre better before your interview.
