Im a newbie here needing some help. I Took the MCAT in August and applield before i got my score. My app. was solid all the way around so I received many secondaries. My first choice is Iowa (im in state) so i only filled out their secondary before i received my score. Well i got 10's on bio and phys. and a 4 on verbal. I know, very low verbal. I have yet to hear anything from them, and i want to sign up for kaplan as soon as possible and retake the MCAT. That said, should I wait, should i sign up or what?...Chances are slim getting in with a 4 on VR but i just dont want to have a chance of throwing $1500 away.

I don't know, you would have to ask them.

many schools have automatic secondaries and will send everyone a secondary without even looking at your application. you should take the kaplan course and retake the mcat. chances of getting in with that 4 are pretty close to zero. schools will happily take your secondary application money and use it towards the 37 cents to mail you a rejection. sorry, don't mean to sound harsh - i'm sure you could do better on verbal though, everyone has bad days. i would recommend retaking and not spending more money on secondaries.

Well, here's what I always say about this issue: it can't hurt to start studying now. If you start studying for the MCAT and end up getting in somewhere, you're that much better prepared and in the studying 'mode' for medical school. If you don't start studying and end up NOT getting in anywhere, you'll feel like you wasted time--your call. The odds aren't good for getting in with a 4 verbal, unless you've taken the MCAT before and your score was much higher, then they'll probably chalk it up to some aberration and disregard the fact that it is so low.

G'luck.

If I was in your situation, I'd probably just buy as many practice tests and books on verbal as I could and not spend the money on the class just to boost one score. My friend got a 6 in verbal (granted that is with 12s on both other sections) and a T on the writing section and is currently at UNC on a full ride. He got hammered at all his interviews about that desparity, but he did end up getting accepted to 3 different schools. And, I don't know about anyone else, but I didn't think the verbal section of TPR's class helped me all that much anyway, but I did start off with a 9 on that section before taking the class. I think verbal is more about learning what kinds of answers certain questions are looking for. If you take enough practice tests and really study the reasons why certain questions have certain answers, there are lots of patterns you'll notice that'll help you get answers correct. Good Luck!

sorry to offer bad news... According to the MSAR, less then 100 got in with less than a 5 in VR. Considering those may be people entering on high school-early entry programs, English as a second language, 4-15-15 scores, etc- lt is not promising.

I wouldn't risk hurting next years app on such low odds. However, I definitely recommend trying to get an appointment with someone in admissions and talking to them about it. Good luck!
