I Am a recent graduate who is negotiating a salary to be part of a six doctor practice in rural arizona. I need to know what a good beginning salary would be to start off at. The practice is open 5x a week and seems to be doing well. There are two doctors who are partners and 4 associate docs. 1 doc will be retiring soon. Any ideas as to what a fair salary would be to start for a new graduate?

What you SHOULD get, since its a rural area, is probably 35% of gross collections, including optical/contact materials, though they will probably want to give you much less than that.

It is a rural location, and if there are limited Optometrists in that area, you could definitely use that to negotiate better terms for yourself.

If there's already 4 associates, my guess is that yor salary is probably determined already. They should be fairly open about what the current associates make & expect to start at a little lower rate than the established associates.

My guess would be $85K with benefits and some type of incentive plan that would get you above $100K

85-90k+benefits (Medical Insurance/Malpractice/AOA Dues/CE Credit/1wk of Leave). That is the average depending on practice location.

Scratch the AOA dues. Better spent on another organization that will support the profession.
