OK here is the thing, I am a non-traditional student, I graduated with a BS in Microb & Chem in 1998. And just finished my MPH Epidemiology in Dec 2008. So my question is, all my science prerequisites are over 10 yrs old, obviously. I really do not want to re-take all the sciences, especially since that would take lots of time & $$ which I do not have getting older here.😱 So my question is, do I really need to take these gchem, ochem, biochem, micro, bio, physics over??? Anyone with a similar experience, please comment !?!?!

BTW I did take Anatomy & Physiology this summer which I never had taken before, and got A's.

I also am preparing to take the DAT now. Any opinion on my chances in getting into Dental School without retaking these courses?? 😕

If it's any help I work in Dental Research. I am hoping this helps me! 🙂

i don't think asking people here would help much, the best way to find out what you need is to contact the schools. U r a mature candidate w/ very unique expeirences so i think you'll probably get special treatment and maybe they'll even waive the pre-reqs

I am a non-traditional student also, graduating in 2002 with a Bio and a Psych degree. When I called several dental schools, they said that the older pre-req's didn't bother them, it's more about how well i can do on the DAT now, which is a tough feat for me b/c I forgot everything and basically have to re-learn 3 years of college work. Stupid question but what's an MPH? A master program? how long did it take you? how were your grades? I have a low undergrad GPA of 3.0 so hearing that I need to do a post-bacc/masters to increase grades and/or kill it on the DAT's. Studying for them now.
But like the previous person said, you should really contact the ds's and see what they say.
When do u plan on taking the DAT?

All I can say, is that it is a LOT easier to good on the DAT than to repeat all those classes. Since you have probably forgotten the material, I just want to suggest you put as much work as you can into it.
minotaur, you know what you are doing. 3.0 with high DAT or a higher gpa with high DAT, the latter is better 🙂.

Thanks for your insight, so nice to hear that older pre-req's did not bother them. I am studying hard to take the DAT for the 1st time, plus I am working. So not sure exactly when I will take the DAT. Depends on how much progress I make with my DAT prep. My undergrad GPA was also low too, mostly since I did a little too much partying and was not serious enough, but with my Masters degree program (MPH = Masters in Public Health) I improved. I got GPA 3.80 which absolutely demonstrate that I am capable of handling upper division coursework. 😀 For sure I think mature & non-traditional applicants are viewed differently by the ADCOM. My MPH program is a 2 yr program, 48 credits total.

Good Luck to you minotaur9, I am sure either way you can't go wrong, just take the DAT and see how it goes. Try reviewing with Chad videos I hear from people on this board that it's really a good prep for G chem and O chem.

UNC Chapel Hill Dental School is the Only school that explicitly mentions on their website that they do not accept coursework over 5 years old.

Many schools do make exceptions so it's worth calling to find out.
