So my freshman year gpa fluctuated around 3.07, I took physics at a diff school and ended up with a boost but my sophomore year was a bummer. I ended up with a C+ in orgo and definitely plan to retake it. I'm concerned because I plan on applying direct to medical school, not because i'm in any hurry but I'm already burdened with student loans that taking a year off would mean i'd have to start repaying back 🙁 Would you recommend me retaking some of my classes to boost my gpa, (i've been told i should do anything to bring my gpa up), is it really too late?

If your a sophomore, no its not to late and i wouldn't really retake a C+ in orgo I but instead just do better in Orgo II like at a A- or better...also how are your other pre-reqs? A couple C's won't completely kill you despite what most of SDN says. If your a sophomore you still have what at least 60-70 credit hours to bring it up. Just aim for at least a 3.4-3.5 and you'll be fine

Just remember those retakes won't do you any good unless you plan on applying to DO schools.

Yeah, retakes dont help you for MD schools. Plus you have tons of time to fix your GPA. You're good. Slow down and just kill the next 2 years!

I wouldn't bother with the retakes. I would just push really hard and ace my classes from there on. I don't think a weak first year or so will kill you, especially if you do a great job with the mcat and your extracurriculars. Ignore the guy who said the DO thing; don't give up on yourself, especially when you're young enough to have time to make a change.

That said, I think taking a year off after grad might be a good idea, both for financial reasons and to build a more itneresting application.

Good luck!

yea you can do that

I disagree with the above posts; I think it would be worth it to retake Orgo I, mainly to make sure you really understand the material before you continue on to the next course in the sequence. In your application, the two grades'll cancel out, so if you get an A in your re-take, you'll end up with a unofficial B/B+ average, which is pretty decent. But don't re-take any other classes unless it was a pre-req and you got lower than a B-, because that'll look suspicious. An upward grade trend is a good thing, so you HAVE to keep doing better each year. Your cGPA won't be very high but the upward grade trend'll look really good, especially if you can end with A's/A-'s

You may have to take a year off. You need to kill your classes. Seriously, try your best but aim for a 4.0 every semester or quarter.
