My brother has been thinking of going to medical school for a bit now.

He's an electrical engineer. He was planning on taking the april mcat 2005, but because of lay offs coming next week. He might be finding himself with a lot of free time on his hands. 🙁

He has all of the basic pre-reqs done, although its been a few years since he took them. He's been slowly studying on his own since april. But he has some work to do in biology, verbal and gen chem I think.

Basically, we're wondering if he should study his butt off and take the upcoming August mcat. And try to get into the current application cycle. Or should he study and and wait for the April 2005 mcat and go into the cycle.

Not sure if ee courses count into his pre-med gpa. He's got a 3.8 without his ee courses included from cornell. With his ee courses it comes down to a 3.5.

For Texas, I think he lacks 1 year of biology courses Texas requires. But on the other hand, because he's been working in MA for the past 2 years he's lost his texas residency. But he hasn't gotten MA residency either since they require 5 years to attain residency.

So should he go for it? Or should he lay off and wait till next year and try and become a resident of a state? Hopefully Texas again.

Thanks

I'd wait until next year. He can still take the August MCAT to see how he does, and then retake in April if necessary. To apply at this point for the class of 2009 he'd have to rush to get his application together as well as letters of recommendation. I think it's better to take the extra year and plan it out well and make sure that all the pre-reqs are taken. If he hasn't done bio, he'll need a year of it for any school he applies to, not just TX.

thanks for the quick reply.

he has 1 year of bio already under his belt. But I think Texas schools require 2, at least thats what he's telling me.
