Thanks in advance for the advice.

So I'm currently registered to take Orgo 2 lab in the fall, but I'm heavily leaning toward dropping it. I'm a Texas IS applicant, and from what I know, only UT Southwestern and Long require it. As much as I hate limiting myself, money is tight and if I take the course I'll have to put the tuition on a CC, and there's the opportunity cost of being unable to find a better job due to scheduling conflicts, which I really need to do. I have been getting IIs in state, and what I want to know is if I am accepted to a school that does NOT require Orgo 2 lab, will it be a problem when I send a transcript to matriculate that I dropped it since it was in my "planned coursework" section? I am going to call them next week to double check that they don't need it, but from what I recall from calling a while ago they all said 8 hours was enough (at my university, 8 hours is Orgo 1 and 2 lecture and 1 lab). I'd essentially be hoping that I get in somewhere other than SW/Long.

Another option is to drop the course for the fall, but register for spring 2019, which would buy me time until mid-late January. If I did indeed get an acceptance somewhere else, I'd be able to drop without penalty, but if I did not, I'd find a way to go ahead and take the course. Does that sound like a good plan?

Anyone can confirm that, except for Southwestern and Long, no other school requires Orgo 2 lab? I know Baylor and Dell explicitly do not.

All Texas medical schools require two semesters of Organic Chemistry plus lab. You may be thinking of Biochemistry.

Addendum:
Here are the requirements listing of two Texas schools - TCOM and UTMB. You will find they both require 6 hours of lecture and 2 hours of lab.

I do have 6 hours of lecture and 2 hours of lab. At my university, organic 1 lab is 2 hours, so taking both lectures and Orgo 1 lab is 8 hours already. Taking Orgo 2 lab would put me at 10 hours.

I would say you are probably fine. Especially if you don't really see yourself going to those two schools.

I can't comment on who requires what when, but can say that timeline-wise, this option makes a lot of sense. While the match will not be over by mid-January, the majority of pre-match acceptances will have been offered before then, so odds are, if you're a strong applicant, you'll have a seat somewhere. And it sounds like it solves your job schedule problems also.

Thanks for the feedback! So my question then is, if a school does not require it, and I don't take it, but indicated that I was taking it on "Planned Coursework", would they penalize me or rescind the acceptance when it comes time to send in my transcript for matriculation? i.e would they be like "Hey, you said you were taking this course, why didn't you take it?"

No. I know someone who was actually signed up to take ochem lab, was accepted last minute into a top 20 school that didn’t require it, and he dropped it on the spot lol. They didn’t care.

lol if I was an adcom, a student dropping OChem lab upon acceptance would show me that I made the right decision.

So what actually happens post-acceptance? You put down a deposit, you submit your background check, and you send in a final transcript that verifies completion of pre-reqs, and that's it?
