I am a sophomore in a Community college, and I'm in a tight situation.

When I started college, I had to work a part time job for my freshman and some of my sophomore year, so I was only able to get around 14 units per semester.

Now that UC applications are due in a month, I was wondering if I should apply if I still wouldn't be able to get organic and physics 4B and 4C done by the end of spring. I am a biology major.

If I stay at a CC for 3 years, would it wreck my chances for dental school? If I stay 3 years, I save 40k instead of going to a UC to "finish up" my lower division classes.

Currently my GPA is 3.7. Would I get accepted to either UC irvine, UCLA, UC Riverside, or UC San Diego? I will have my IGTC done by the end of spring. I will also have about 61 units done by the end of spring.

-Sorry it was so long, but thats my situation. Thanks 🙂

I know that you can get into UCR iono about the others these days. They are quit competitive. I know that D school likes to see pre reqs done at a 4 year university but economy it tough right now. Just make sure u do really good on ur DAT. I would suggest doing as much pre reqs at a 4 year university as possible

If you want to save money and still be competitive- state schools are the way to go. You don't have to go to a UC to be labeled as competitive. Just state school it, ace the dat, and save money =)

I agree. 🙂

Okay, so an in state school (CSU) wouldn't be a bad path? I know money is an issue, and I need to be competitive at the same time. The reason I went to a ccc in the first place was so I can save money before going to a UC. I thought UC's were looked at as a higher standard.

In your opinion, should I still apply to UC's for fall 2011? Or the chances that grim that I shouldn't waste application money.

Theres NOTHING wrong with a state school. Sure it doesnt look as good as a UC, but not everyone can afford it. Schools understand that many state students need to money crunch/work jobs etc. I know quite a few ppl accepted at top schools (UCLA, UCSF, UoP etc) from state schools. If money is a factor, I would choose state over UC.

Now I would agree that cc are frowned upon..., but state doesn't have that BAD of a reputation compared to UC's.

go 2 UC. There are research options and many great leadership positions that make your application shine. Most admission pll that visit the school said they recognize and respect the UC system so they won't question your school once u apply. I know u can get to UCR 4 sure. They are reforming their admission policy under the new chancellor so it will get tougher soon.

Yea, I think I will apply to at least to UCR, UCI, and UCLA (ha yea right). But if I get in one I will go Lord willing for the sake of not being in a ccc for 3 years.

When you said that you wanted to do 3 years at a community college, I assume you wanted to do only 1 year at a UC. You know that UCs have a minimum unit requirement to graduate from them? You'll need to stay there two years..regardless.

state school is perfectly fine. just do well with your grades and still be well rounded and participate in extracurriculars/shadowing, etc. and your application will look good like anyone elses.

i met a dental student who went to state school (rutgers) and she was laughing and told me that she makes fun of her friend (also at the d-school) because he went to harvard and while she went to state school and saved a lot of money, they both ended up in the same place.

Arrrgghhh this is getting frustrating. So I can save a bunch of money from a csu, very true. But wow, that totally changes my plans in the first place. I mean, the only reason I aimed for UC transfer was for a higher chance of getting into Dent school. I'm not even sure if I have the requirements for CSU, since I've been focusing on UC requirements. Interesting..... maybe i'll apply to the UC's I said I would, and maybe San Diego state?
