I know that some of you are bothered by people asking for advice, but after all, that's what this site is all about. We are here to support one another in our journey to becoming dentists.

So here is my situation. I've got 2 years left to finish by bachelors in biology. My wife has 3 years left to finish her bachelors in ultrasound, 2 years of school and 1 year of intern. I'm hoping to apply next summer and start dental school the year she does her intern. However, I'm limited in applying to schools where she has intern sites available; OHSU, ASDOH, UCLA, UW, and Baylor. I have heard that you should apply to about 10 schools to have a good chance at getting in. If I only apply to 5 schools, with the situation I'm in, do you think it looks bad?

Next question, I'm done now with the required courses for the DAT, would I be smart to go ahead and take the DAT this summer? I figure that if I do it and get a good score, 20+, it would be out of the way and I can really focus on my application next summer.

Thanks to anyone who can offer some advice!

Thanks for your reply. I would prefer to not spend time apart for school. I would rather wait to reapply the following year than be seperated due to school. Thanks for helping me clarify that.

As for the DAT, I'm going to take the Kaplan course this summer. I'm planning on spending about 6 hours a day for 5 weeks on studying before I take the test. I have not taken Anatomy and Physiology yet, which is the only thing that could lower my score.

Thanks again for your response.

In Texas 90% of the students to med schools must be residents by law. That means at Baylor only 9 spots are open for out of state applicants. Many yrs they never take out of state people at Baylor because it is pretty competitive in Texas. If you decide to apply to Baylor you better be 20+, have a super high GPA and great experience. Otherwise, I feel you would be wasting your time. Here is an idea….You could move to Dallas with your wife, establish residency and then apply after a couple of years. The major benefit of doing this is Texas med schools are the cheapest in the U.S. because the state pays a lot of your school cost with tax dollars. No matter what you choose to do, good luck.

i dont know if this is correct but i think some schools dont take DAT scores that are 2-3 years old....so if you going to apply in 3 years it might be too early to take dats. but i dunno if its true....
