need some help

I posted a thread yesterday concerning the LOR and the personal statement. I guess it wasnt posted but well I want to ask how long the essay needs to be. 1000 words or 4500 characters with space? i am getting confused and for the LOR, should i ask my professors and dentist to send the letters online or is it possible for them to send those through mail? i will appreciate for any help.
