Need some huge help in improving my study methods for bio courses

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
It's strange to say this as a premed, but my greatest weakness is in biology. I need to spend longer time than other students in order to get the same grade.

I always have a hard time memorizing a lot of information. I just cannot memorize the material on slides just by going thorough them multiple times.

Currently, I am take notes in my own words from both textbooks and lecture slides, but this study method takes too much time, and I don't know how am I going to keep up with medical school course load which is 2X faster and 2X more than an upper level bio course in undergrad.

Is anyone having a same problem? How do you guys memorize the information quickly for biology courses?

I always hated slides. However I liked the pictures! Haha almost an oxymoron! Anyways, I tried to find the big picture and work my way down. I don't just start memorizing little things until I understand what is going on in general with the big picture! Then I broke it down into a little bit smaller parts and started to memorize those and find the connections between them. I just kept going until I had what I needed memorized! It worked pretty well for me I guess, although re-reading this post I don't think I articulate very clearly.

If all else fail, seek a tutor.

Try becoming a tutor. I learn best when I'm teaching someone else!

Lol, I'm writing notes for Bio right now. When I study, I simply reread my notes until I can name/explain everything to myself only by looking at the heading of whatever I'm studying. Talk out loud too! You may look like a weirdo, but it helps a ton.

Form a studygroup or go to a tutoring center if they have one at your school.

I'm with you on that! i'm taking bio this year and it's very much hurting my grade 🙁 I got a B first quarter, and I'm seriously studying at this very moment for the final that will make or break my grade (B or C) ugh. Next quarter, I need to find new study methods for biology, but yep, memorizing large chunks of material takes me A LOT of time :/

Bio is my strong suite, best way is to read the book and try to teach people, it will help you learn more by teaching and it boosts your confidence which is key for test taking.

Try reading and writing notes on each chapter that will be on the exam a week ahead! Also for bio do home work questions, then do them again but read the question differently this helped my friend a lot. So question is: how many molecules of ATP are consumed during glycolysis! Reread like: during glycolysis_____ 2 molecules of the ATP are consumed. Then after you answer try and add 1 extra thing to the question so then add: 2 molecules of ATP are consumed to begin but then 4 are produced for each glucose molecule.

I'm really sorry I didn't realize how old this was lol it just popped up at the bottom.

Read 2 times the material then consult with notes.
1st time - read the entire material 2 weeks before and explain to yourself.
2nd time - read the entire material 1 week before the exam and explain to yourself, also put emphasis in the tricky learning parts of the material.
Read notes- consult with the notes taken in class since they can be a good portion of the content in the exam.

If you need to be more secure, you can read a 3rd time within 4-3 days of the exam day.
You can also search in YouTube or any other resources (some colleges websites, old exams, etc.)
