Need some serious advice about continuing pre med. please help!

Hi all,

I recently applied to an early assurance program for a medical school. I just got back yesterday that I did not get in. Hearing this made me extremely discouraged as to why I did not get in. The committee picks ten people and there were less than 30 applicants. I feel like I had a really good chance: (upcoming junior btw)

-3.93 gpa
-100+ hrs volunteering in clinical setting at hospital
- shadowed doctor over last summer
- greats LORs
-involved on campus with different activities, including amsa, aed, and neuroscience society
- I tutor, am the leader of a floor hockey team outside of school, and have many other extracurricular activities
- I put a ton of work into the seven essays written and was told by many people that hey were really good
-my interview went well too

Not sure why I didn't get in tbh. I'm just so lost at the moment. I'm trying to see if pursuing medicine is even worth it anymore. If I couldn't get into a program, how will I get into a med school with thousands of applicants? Not to mention I still have to take mcat, and money would be an issue for myself and family in the future for applications and traveling for interviews if necessary.

What do you guys think? What should I do? Be completely honest. Thank you!

You should continue premed if you want to be a physician. You can get in, especially with that monster GPA.

I'm just having a lot of doubt. If I'm doing so well, why couldn't I get into the program? What will be different when I apply to med school?

Who knows. Maybe someone on the committee has a beef with you. Maybe there were 10 extraordinary students who applied and you were #11.

It's not worth harping on or getting down on yourself on. Every year something like 20,000 students are accepted to medical school. Your GPA is higher than like 90% of them. Your chances of getting into any given med school are something like 2-3%, but your chances of getting into A medical school are probably going to be north of 80% if you get a 30+ on your MCAT.

Don't worry about this particular program. Keep getting good grades, keep building your clinical and volunteer experience, rock the MCAT, and win.

The 10 that did get in may have had 4.0 or had a higher science GPA. Those 10 may have had connections at the school as well. Do not let this discourage you. Those programs are difficult to get into. Study hard for the MCAT and keep the grades up (especially your science GPA) and you will get in to medical school.
