Goose, whats the meeting for?

General things to ask at this stage are: what sort of personal qualities and goals fit nicely with the role of the anesthesiologist? what drew you to the field? what stands out about our program? I'm pretty intrigued, what do you recommend at this stage to get more involved? What are PD's looking for in interested applicants? Do your balls hang low or wobble to and fro? Ok, leave out that last one.

Feel free to tell him what other fields you are interested in and why. Also throw in detractors from those areas as well. Feel free to state how you feel about certain aspects of our field. Like, "I'm pretty non-confrontational but one of my concerns is how to deal with relentless attacks from disgruntled OR personel. How do people handle these situations."

I don't wanna spoon feed you ideas, but I think you get the drift. The PD interview should only serve one purpose. That is to answer ANY questions you have about anesthesiology (including department specific questions concerning case numbers etc..) which will help you in deciding your career goals in the field of medicine in general.

Thaz it man.

Dude, just be yourself. You've got such a great sense of humor. I just dont see you having a problem talking to ANYONE. Just be yourself. Don't be tight.
Ask him if he's seen your sdn avatar.
Just about every interview I've been on has been real low key/cordial...I attribute that not to the situation being low key cuz some of them have been pretty important (med school, residency, job interview being top 3)...but hey, I'm a low key dude for the most part, but I know when its time to take care of bizness. An interviewer can sense someone who is sincere. You've got that in you, bro. As Military says, some people have the Force. Use the Force. 👍

Goose,

First of all, I agree that you're bound to do great tomorrow if you just chill and be yourself. Personality is REALLY tough to convey on the web (what with the virtually complete lack of tone, non-verbal cues, etc.), and we all think that you're a cool dude...so that's saying something.

My suggestion, if the meeting is taking place somewhere that you're interested in, is to ask about some things that don't have anything to do with medicine (i.e. opportunities to participate in your favorite hobbies/sports). This is not to say that you shouldn't have some good questions regarding the site/residency, but asking about non-medical issues will help to "fill-you-out" as a person. And we all know that one of the draws to anesthesiology is that most of the folks are pretty kick ass dudes/dudettes!

Good luck man!

Very, very well said. 👍

hey guys,

sorry I didnt get a chance to write back, I just logged on in the morning and read the replies before I took off to the meeting. As for the purpose of the meeting, it was just a quick kinda, hello how are you, I am interested in your program, I would like to learn more by speaking to you and some of the residents kinda thing.

I took all your advice, I just went in relaxed, showed that I was interested, cracked a few jokes, asked about the program. All in all he was very cool, and it went well.

Too my boys out there (and girls-chica) thanks for all your kind words and advice, it means alot to me 👍

peace
