Health and Disabilities Leadership Institute
August 7-9, 2009

One out of five Americans living today has at least one form of disability. This group constitutes one of the fastest growing demographics in the nation today. It is important as a health care provider to have compassion and competency in working with patients with disabilities, yet studies have shown that Among non-elderly people with disabilities, 25% reported they had difficulty finding a health care professional who understood their disability.
The goal of this program is to address this disparity, dispel myths, and foster advocacy in future health care providers for their patients with disabilities.
The Health and Disabilities Institute will be the first AMSA institute designed specifically to empower future leaders in the field of disabilities advocacy and health promotion. We welcome all students interested in developing community-based interventions to address health promotion pertaining to disabilities. Composed of lectures, workshops, and discussions, this institute will be an educational experience unlike any you have had in your medical training!
