Hey guys, I've got a dilema. I have a 3.0 science and 3.47 overall gpa. It is not bound to get too much higher with the pass rate of my upcoming science classes and it might drop even if I work my ass off. If you had a choice between getitng into Pharamacy School right now Guaranteed(Because I have good PCAT scores and a Competitive pharmacy GPA), or waiting a year and possibly lowering your chances to get into Pharmacy school but also seeing if you can hopefully get into a Carribean school, or with a great deal of luck, DO school, what would you do?

Note: I really love the profession, I would love nothing more but to diagnose and treat people as a internal medicine doctor. But I cringe at the idea of residency, giant medical debt, being on call, and long hours even after you graduate. But Pharmacy is one boring as hell job, and my only motivation is the money.

If i were in your shoes, I'd be sure to have an upward science grade trend and I'd apply to DO schools. Your cGPA is at the average for their entering students right now.

But it is said, that if you can be happy doing anything else, don't go into medicine, which requires a lot of time, loss of sleep, and debt before one is financially productive.

Perhaps you haven't considered subspecialty pharmacy. One of our pharmacists left recently to go into Ostomy Care, which is more lucrative and challenging. Another of our pharmacists did whatever one does to specialize in Diabetes Care, and is waiting for a spot in that area to open up before he jumps ship.

Caribbean school man, Why wait a year as well? You can apply for 2011 entering class. I've applied to Trinity school of medicine as a back up and have been accepted. They will accept you as well, provided you've done your mcat, scored around 25 and did not bomb the bio section (should be no problem since you did well on PCAT's). Only thing you have to make sure of when you go to the Caribbean is that you are self motivated... you need to kill your steps. If you fail, no one cares, the fault is on you.

This is a huge decision for you to make. Good luck and no regrets.

If I were in your shoes, I would not do pharmacy since it might not be your first choice. Besides, the job market for pharmacist is very competitive nowadays. I spoke to a consultant pharmacist about a month ago and he told me at his workplace (South FL) if they are hiring a pharmacist, there is usually 50+ applicants for that one spot. One can argue that pharmacy schools are becoming diploma mill now since there are so many of them opening their door each year. Now one can get into pharmacy school with a 2.6 GPA and it was not that way 5 years ago. Go DO because you have a good cGPA. Since your sGPA is 3.0 , I think you should take a couple of upper division science classes and get good grade on them so you can prove to adcoms your can handle the rigor of med school curriculum. Take the mcat and a score of 27+ would make you competitive at most DO schools. With your GPA, I think you should avoid caribbean schools at all cost; however, if you are going to carib, it 's only worth going to the BIG 4 (SGU, AUC, SABA, ROSS) but you should know that coming out of a carib school will limit your chances in term of residency choice since it is hard to get into a competitive residency coming out of a carib school.

I was in your shoes last year. Decided to apply pharm. when I wasn't truely passionate about pharmacy. Withdrew from acceptance, and decided med school is where I ultimately wanted to be. Don't apply just to apply, if you want to do medicine, DO IT!

I would think that carribean school is not the right option for you because as SuperMDLife pointed out -you have to be self-motivated and they do not make it easy on you. The way it sounds for this semester you are not doing as well as you would have liked either so it is possible that you may not be as ready as you might want to be for a Carribean school.

I understand the passion for wanting to diagnose and treat patients and even though I think about things like residency and debt, those issues pale in comparison to my desire to become a physician. If you truly cringe at those issues then maybe they would hinder your progress in DO/MD school as well.

I think if you have a good PCAT, the shorter amount of time in Pharmacy school and as Catylstick pointed out -the option to specialze, pharmacy school may be the best bet for you. That being said if your desire heavily outweighs your negatives of medical school then you should try for a DO school.

I was in the same spot and went pharmacy. 2 years later and I'm applying to medical school. Go where your passion lies.
