I don’t know how many of you are in the situation of trying to find a job and are unable to do so; well that seems to a situation that I find myself in these days. I have been looking since late august and to add to the problem I live in Baton Rouge, la. I am sure every one knows about the mess that has been caused by the last two hurricanes. Well for those of you who do not know luckily for me Baton Rouge has had a huge population boom and the majority of those people are now looking for employment in Baton Rouge. the problem I have is I have got to do something productive for my sanity and because I cant just sit around for the next year I don’t think med school would like that. Any way I think volunteering may be the only alternative however; I am not a 100% sure how med school would look at that. It seems like they would be sympatric considering the situation down here.

Secondly does any one have any other ideas of how to find a job in this saturated job market? I have tried classifieds, monster.com, careerbuilder.com, friends ECT but nothing yet. Any other ideas would be greatly appreciated.

And also is any one aware of the employment freeze in Louisiana pertaining to government jobs? I was told this but I don’t know if it is true, if so that might just make my life a whole lot more difficult.

Hi Hockeyplayer:

What particular kind of job you are looking for? I also live here in Baton Rouge and go to LSU. Do you want to volunteer in hospitals? I am not sure I can help you in this. But living in same city and with similar profession I can understand how you feel. Good luck for your endevors.

Right now I am looking for anything. Starting Monday I will be volunteering at the greater Baton Rouge community clinic so that is a start. I just need something to show that I am not just sitting around while I reapply. A job in a hospital would be preferable.

I've got a non-medical job suggestion for you... you could make a pile of money in Louisiana these days, working at a job I used to have when I lived there. Check out "Gulf Industries" or "Signtronix" in the white pages and call them up. You can sell outdoor lighted signs to businesses on commission and make a ton of cash if you can follow a simple presentation with enthusiasm and some people skills. Just think of all the signs destroyed by the hurricanes! I could make a quarter-million in six months, if I moved back to La. But alas, my kids, school, and the lingering hope of getting into med school all keep me here....

Good Luck, and Geaux Tigers!!

work is work. sometimes when the job market sucks, you can't be toooo picky. fortunently, there is always Wal-mart, and all the fast food places. although it won't look as impressive, its something to do where you can make money. its good, honest, hard work. and you can always volunteer on days off. i'm actually considering it. i have my B.A., my teacher certification and am working on my master's. and i can't find a job anywhere! i have experience doing different things too. so after looking since july, i am considering fast food. like i said, its honest hard work. i saw a sign at BK offering a $680 sign on bonus.. 🙂 i've even considered housekeeping. i figure i can't be too picky. 🙁 i'm a broke grad student..i'm desperate.

This was how I felt when I finally found a job. In my area there are tons of call centers where at least you talk to real people all day. Who knows, there might be one in the area for health insurance or something. When I interviewed with med schools, I focused on how I help customers figure out their insurance and the new people skills I'm developing. Yelling cussing customers can help out with that lots :meanie:

lsuhockeyplayer, I am also a student at LSU. I worked at Pennington and at LSU before, and I can verify that yes there is a hiring freeze for the LSU system. It is causing many problems, but w/ insufficient funds, I guess it was their only option. Do you need to work for the money or for the experience?
