Optometry schools on their websites often list manual dexterity as a characteristic an optometrist should have. I was wondering if anybody could elaborate on that? Are the eye diagnostic machines and tools difficult to operate? The websites say optometrists perform intricate tasks with their hands. Would an example of an intricate task be putting a contact lense on a patient? I have never worked with my hands other than to push a pencil or type, so I don't know how to determine if I have good manual dexterity.

you're going to have to remove foreign bodies from eye with syringes , learn to use both hands to do tasks (you become ambydextrous) , instill punctal plugs, and yes put in contact lenses.

These can all be learned. it just takes practice practice. I never thought I could do stuff with my left hand.. but I learned I can after I tried enough :)
