So I know I need to retake some prereqs to be a competitive applicant. I graduated last year with a BS in chem at NCSU. I've got two questions:

1 - I'm interested in Campbell, UNC, and Wingate. I read on a separate thread UNC accepts online prereq courses. I havent been able to confirm the same with Campbell and Wingate. Anyone know?

2 - (If I am able to take Ochem online for credit,) do I have to retake the lab as well? (State now offers the lecture and lab separate) I'm not trying to be lazy or anything, but now that I graduated I'm working full time and I would need to figure out how to incorporate the lab in my schedule. Weird thing is when I took Ochem years ago the lab was counted in the lecture.

Thanks for any advice!

I'd call the school to check for the orgo online. However, I would say to take the lab again anyway because you have 4 hours of Organic with whatever grade and you are going to be replacing it with 3 hours of a (hopefully) higher grade, meaning your GPA won't rise as much. If you take the lab then you are kinda getting some free GPA boosters for pharmacy school, IMO. But you have technically fulfilled the pre-reqs already but you want a higher grade, which seems to me like you would be fine without taking the lab. However, like I stated, call the school to check, They don't really know how well you did for the lab right now the way it is...

The only local school that offers Organic Chemistry online is NCSU and it's only the lecture. (Having taught Organic Chemistry lab sections at State, the lab is a massive joke compared to almost every other school in the country, so I would try to avoid taking the lab section again since you'll do MUCH more work than you did at State. One of the professors in the department said that lab was worth nothing since they acknowledged how much of a joke the lab is at NCSU when they combined lecture & lab.)

I don't know why you would have to retake the lab unless you earned below a C in the class. Is there a reason why you wouldn't want to take it with Sandberg at State? You're going to have a HECK of a time finding the course online, let alone finding it in-state. (I helped one of my friends do that and I found it at a community college in Oregon for $250/cr hour (out-of-state rates).)

I think you may have misunderstood my question. I plan on retaking it online through NCSU. I know the lab is now separate from the lecture so I was wondering if it would matter if I didn't retake the lab since I've already done it.

But I like Jabberwocky's thinking! (the 3 vs 4 credit hours, and "free GPA boosters") Makes it seem like a better idea to retake it.

Sorry, you never stated in your initial post about your intention to retake it at State.

However, since you did graduate from State, are you able to retake a class in which you got higher than a C? I would check on that because, IIRC, you aren't allowed to retake classes that you earned a C or better on your first attempt unless you were a freshman when you took the class. (I'm currently tutoring a repeat offender of CH101 who is able to retake the class because he failed it as a freshman.)

Sorry, I guess I should have specified. Since I'm a graduate of State, I'd be applying as a NDS. I dont think it would matter I'm retaking it? My former advisor recommended I retake it to be competitive for pharmacy school. I think State's policy is that both grade will be counted, but the one you're referring to is the "freshman repeat." (If you make a C or worse in a 100 or 200 level class you can retake it and have the first grade not count in your GPA) I guess.. Idk. They kind of confuse me with all these "rules." IMO, they shouldn't care if I'm paying them. haha

FYI, in case any one else was wondering the same.. I finally found this on Wingate:

"Online communications and science courses cannot be accepted in fulfillment of prepharmacy requirements."

So i guess that's a NO for Wingate

Definitely check with State about your ability to retake the class. Honestly, it should NOT matter since you're paying for the class; However, WolfWeb has been reworked and you may be blocked from registering for the class since it's already on your record. Totally hokey, but an intern at my company who attends State ran into that issue this week when she registered for classes.

NCSU is really strange about it because my undergrad (Purdue) would let you retake a class regardless of your grade.

OK thanks. I'll find out.
